2012-02-20x32: Add x32 VDSO supportH. J. Lu1-1/+45
Add support for the x32 VDSO. The x32 VDSO takes advantage of the similarity between the x86-64 and the x32 ABIs to contain the same content, only the container is different, as the x32 VDSO obviously is an x32 shared object. Signed-off-by: H. Peter Anvin <hpa@zytor.com>
2011-07-13x86-64: Add --no-undefined to vDSO buildAndy Lutomirski1-0/+1
This gives much nicer diagnostics when something goes wrong. It's supported at least as far back as binutils 2.15. 2011-05-24x86-64: Clean up vdso/kernel shared variablesAndy Lutomirski1-1/+1
Variables that are shared between the vdso and the kernel are currently a bit of a mess. They are each defined with their own magic, they are accessed differently in the kernel, the vsyscall page, and the vdso, and one of them (vsyscall_clock) doesn't even really exist. This changes them all to use a common mechanism. All of them are delcared in vvar.h with a fixed address (validated by the linker script). In the kernel (as before), they look like ordinary read-write variables. In the vsyscall page and the vdso, they are accessed through a new macro VVAR, which gives read-only access. The vdso is now loaded verbatim into memory without any fixups. As a side bonus, access from the vdso is faster because a level of indirection is removed. While we're at it, pack jiffies and vgetcpu_mode into the same cacheline. 2010-12-13x86, gcc-4.6: Use gcc -m options when building vdsoH. Peter Anvin1-2/+2
The vdso Makefile passes linker-style -m options not to the linker but to gcc. This happens to work with earlier gcc, but fails with gcc 4.6. Pass gcc-style -m options, instead. Note: all currently supported versions of gcc supports -m32, so there is no reason to conditionalize it any more. Reported-by: H. J. Lu <hjl.tools@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: H. 2010-06-18x86, vdso: Error out if the vdso contains external referencesH. Peter Anvin1-1/+2
The vdso is a piece of userspace code which is supposed to be fully self-contained. Any external (undefined) reference is an error, and should be caught at compile time. This was giving us trouble when compiling with -Os on gcc 4.5.0, for example (failed inline). The need to do a buildtime check was pointed out by Andi Kleen. Required changes include disabling profiling for: * arch/kernel/acpi/realmode and arch/kernel/boot/compressed: not linked to main kernel * arch/vdso, arch/kernel/vsyscall_64 and arch/kernel/hpet: profiling causes segfaults during boot (incompatible context) Signed-off-by: Peter Oberparleiter <oberpar@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Andi Kleen <andi@firstfloor.org> Cc: Huang Ying <ying.huang@intel.com> Cc: Li Wei <W.Li@Sun.COM> Cc: Michael Ellerman <michaele@au1.ibm.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Cc: Heiko Carstens <heicars2@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <mschwid2@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Rusty Russell <rusty@rustcorp.com.au> Cc: WANG Cong <xiyou.wangcong@gmail.com> Cc: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Cc: Jeff Dike <jdike@addtoit.com> Cc: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2008-07-16x86_64: further cleanup of 32-bit compat syscall mechanismsJeremy Fitzhardinge1-1/+1
AMD only supports "syscall" from 32-bit compat usermode. Intel and Centaur(?) only support "sysenter" from 32-bit compat usermode. Set the X86 feature bits accordingly, and set up the vdso in accordance with those bits. On the offchance we run on in a 64-bit environment which supports neither syscall nor sysenter from 32-bit mode, then fall back to the int $0x80 vdso. 2008-04-19x86 vDSO: compile with -g, 64-bitRoland McGrath1-1/+2
The 64-bit vDSO's sources are compiled with -g0 for no good reason. Using -g when enabled lets their separate debug files be used at runtime via build ID matching, same as we can see 32-bit vDSO's assembly sources. 2008-02-29x86 vdso: fix build locale dependencyRoland McGrath1-2/+4
Priit Laes discovered that the sed command processing nm output was sensitive to locale settings. This was addressed in commit 03994f01e8b72b3d01fd3d09d1cc7c9f421a727c by using [:alnum:] in place of [a-zA-Z0-9]. But that solution too is locale-dependent and may not always match the identifiers it needs to. The better fix is just to run sed et al with a fixed locale setting in all builds. 2008-02-26x86: fix build on non-C locales.Priit Laes1-1/+1
For some locales regex range [a-zA-Z] does not work as it is supposed to. so we have to use [:alnum:] and [:xdigit:] to make it work as intended. [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estonian_alphabet Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>
2008-02-11x86: vdso_install fixRoland McGrath1-10/+12
The makefile magic for installing the 32-bit vdso images on disk had a little error. 2008-01-30x86: teach vdso to cleanSam Ravnborg1-0/+2

2008-01-30x86 vDSO: consolidate vdso32Roland McGrath1-1/+1
This makes x86_64's ia32 emulation support share the sources used in the 32-bit kernel for the 32-bit vDSO and much of its setup code. The 32-bit vDSO mapping now behaves the same on x86_64 as on native 32-bit. The abi.syscall32 sysctl on x86_64 now takes the same values that vm.vdso_enabled takes on the 32-bit kernel. That is, 1 means a randomized vDSO location, 2 means the fixed old address. The CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO option is now available to make this the default setting, the same meaning it has for the 32-bit kernel. (This does not affect the 64-bit vDSO.) The argument vdso32=[012] can be used on both 32-bit and 64-bit kernels to set this paramter at boot time. The vdso=[012] argument still does this same thing on the 32-bit kernel. 2008-01-30x86 vDSO: ia32 vdso32-syscall buildRoland McGrath1-0/+1
This puts the syscall version of the 32-bit vDSO in arch/x86/vdso/vdso32/ for 64-bit IA32 support. This is not used yet, but it paves the way for consolidating the 32-bit vDSO source and build logic all in one place. 2008-01-30x86 vDSO: vdso32 setupRoland McGrath1-1/+1
This moves arch/x86/kernel/sysenter_32.c to arch/x86/vdso/vdso32-setup.c, keeping all the code relating only to vDSO magic in the vdso/ subdirectory. This is a pure renaming, but it paves the way to consolidating the code for dealing with 32-bit vDSOs across CONFIG_X86_32 and CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION. 2008-01-30x86 vDSO: i386 vdso32Roland McGrath1-2/+6

2008-01-30x86 vDSO: vdso32 buildRoland McGrath1-3/+75
This builds the 32-bit vDSO images in the arch/x86/vdso subdirectory. Nothing uses the images yet, but this paves the way for consolidating the vDSO build logic all in one place. The new images use a linker script sharing the layout parts from vdso-layout.lds.S with the 64-bit vDSO. A new vdso32-syms.lds is generated in the style of vdso-syms.lds. 2008-01-30x86 vDSO: use vdso-syms.ldsRoland McGrath1-2/+1
This patch changes the kernel's references to addresses in the vDSO image to be based on the symbols defined by vdso-syms.lds instead of the old vdso-syms.o symbols. This is all wrapped up in a macro defined by the new asm-x86/vdso.h header; that's the only place in the kernel source that has to know the details of the scheme for getting vDSO symbol values. 2008-01-30x86 vDSO: generate vdso-syms.ldsRoland McGrath1-0/+14
This patch adds a new way of extracting symbols from the built vDSO image. This is much simpler and less fragile than using ld -R; it removes the need to control the DSO layout quite so exactly. I was clearly unduly distracted by clever ld uses when I did the original vDSO implementation. 2007-10-17x86: Install unstripped copy of 64bit vdso to diskRoland McGrath1-1/+16
This keeps an unstripped copy of the 64bit vDSO images built before they are stripped and embedded in the kernel. The unstripped copies get installed in $(MODLIB)/vdso/ by "make install" (or you can explicitly use the subtarget "make vdso_install"). 2007-10-14kbuild: enable 'make CFLAGS=...' to add additional options to CCSam Ravnborg1-2/+2
The variable CFLAGS is a wellknown variable and the usage by kbuild may result in unexpected behaviour. On top of that several people over time has asked for a way to pass in additional flags to gcc. This patch replace use of CFLAGS with KBUILD_CFLAGS all over the tree and enabling one to use: make CFLAGS=... to specify additional gcc commandline options. One usecase is when trying to find gcc bugs but other use cases has been requested too. Patch was tested on following architectures: alpha, arm, i386, x86_64, mips, sparc, sparc64, ia64, m68k Test was simple to do a defconfig build, apply the patch and check that nothing got rebuild.
