2019-10-10docs: Move the user-space ioctl() docs to userspace-apiJonathan Corbet5-2983/+0
This is strictly user-space material at this point, so put it with the other user-space API documentation. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Corbet <corbet@lwn.net>
2019-10-10docs: move botching-up-ioctls.rst to the process guideJonathan Corbet2-226/+0
This is overall information for kernel developers, and not part of the user-space API. Cc: Daniel Vetter <daniel@ffwll.ch> Signed-off-by: Jonathan Corbet <corbet@lwn.net>
2019-07-28fs-verity: add UAPI headerEric Biggers1-0/+1
Add the UAPI header for fs-verity, including two ioctls: - FS_IOC_ENABLE_VERITY - FS_IOC_MEASURE_VERITY These ioctls are documented in the "User API" section of Documentation/filesystems/fsverity.rst. Examples of using these ioctls can be found in fsverity-utils (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiggers/fsverity-utils.git). I've also written xfstests that test these ioctls (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiggers/xfstests-dev.git/log/?h=fsverity). 2019-07-15docs: ioctl: add it to the uAPI guideMauro Carvalho Chehab2-3/+1
While 100% of its contents is userspace, let's keep the dir at the same place, as this is a well-known location. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab+samsung@kernel.org>
2019-07-15docs: ioctl: convert to ReSTMauro Carvalho Chehab6-1252/+1813
Rename the iio documentation files to ReST, add an index for them and adjust in order to produce a nice html output via the Sphinx build system. The cdrom.txt and hdio.txt have their own particular syntax. In order to speedup the conversion, I used a small ancillary perl script: my $d; $d .= $_ while(<>); $d =~ s/(\nCDROM\S+)\s+(\w[^\n]*)/$1\n\t$2\n/g; $d =~ s/(\nHDIO\S+)\s+(\w[^\n]*)/$1\n\t$2\n/g; $d =~ s/(\n\s*usage:)[\s\n]*(\w[^\n]*)/$1:\n\n\t $2\n/g; $d =~ s/(\n\s*)(E\w+[\s\n]*\w[^\n]*)/$1- $2/g; $d =~ s/(\n\s*)(inputs|outputs|notes):\s*(\w[^\n]*)/$1$2:\n\t\t$3\n/g; print $d; It basically add blank lines on a few interesting places. The script is not perfect: still several things require manual work, but it saved quite some time doing some obvious stuff. At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab+samsung@kernel.org>
2019-07-15docs: ioctl-number.txt: convert it to ReST formatMauro Carvalho Chehab2-351/+363
The conversion itself is simple: add a markup for the title of this file and add markups for both tables. Yet, the big table here with IOCTL numbers is badly formatted: on several lines, the "Include File" column has some values that are bigger than the reserved space there. Also, on several places, a comment was misplaced at the "Include File" space. So, most of the work here is to actually ensure that each field will be properly fixed. Also worth to mention that some URLs have the asterisk character on it. Well, Sphinx has an issue with asterisks in the middle of an string. As this is URL, use the alternate format: %2A. As a side effect of this patch, it is now a lot easier to see that some reserved ioctl numbers are missing the include files where it is supposed to be used. PS.: While this is part of a subdir, I opted to convert this single file alone, as this file has a potential of conflicts, as most subsystem maintainers touch it. 2018-12-11seccomp: add a return code to trap to userspaceTycho Andersen1-0/+1
This patch introduces a means for syscalls matched in seccomp to notify some other task that a particular filter has been triggered. The motivation for this is primarily for use with containers. For example, if a container does an init_module(), we obviously don't want to load this untrusted code, which may be compiled for the wrong version of the kernel anyway. Instead, we could parse the module image, figure out which module the container is trying to load and load it on the host. As another example, containers cannot mount() in general since various filesystems assume a trusted image. However, if an orchestrator knows that e.g. a particular block device has not been exposed to a container for writing, it want to allow the container to mount that block device (that is, handle the mount for it). This patch adds functionality that is already possible via at least two other means that I know about, both of which involve ptrace(): first, one could ptrace attach, and then iterate through syscalls via PTRACE_SYSCALL. Unfortunately this is slow, so a faster version would be to install a filter that does SECCOMP_RET_TRACE, which triggers a PTRACE_EVENT_SECCOMP. Since ptrace allows only one tracer, if the container runtime is that tracer, users inside the container (or outside) trying to debug it will not be able to use ptrace, which is annoying. It also means that older distributions based on Upstart cannot boot inside containers using ptrace, since upstart itself uses ptrace to monitor services while starting. The actual implementation of this is fairly small, although getting the synchronization right was/is slightly complex. Finally, it's worth noting that the classic seccomp TOCTOU of reading memory data from the task still applies here, but can be avoided with careful design of the userspace handler: if the userspace handler reads all of the task memory that is necessary before applying its security policy, the tracee's subsequent memory edits will not be read by the tracer. 2018-09-09Drop all 00-INDEX files from Documentation/Henrik Austad1-12/+0
This is a respin with a wider audience (all that get_maintainer returned) and I know this spams a *lot* of people. Not sure what would be the correct way, so my apologies for ruining your inbox. The 00-INDEX files are supposed to give a summary of all files present in a directory, but these files are horribly out of date and their usefulness is brought into question. Often a simple "ls" would reveal the same information as the filenames are generally quite descriptive as a short introduction to what the file covers (it should not surprise anyone what Documentation/sched/sched-design-CFS.txt covers) A few years back it was mentioned that these files were no longer really needed, and they have since then grown further out of date, so perhaps it is time to just throw them out. A short status yields the following _outdated_ 00-INDEX files, first counter is files listed in 00-INDEX but missing in the directory, last is files present but not listed in 00-INDEX. List of outdated 00-INDEX: Documentation: (4/10) Documentation/sysctl: (0/1) Documentation/timers: (1/0) Documentation/blockdev: (3/1) Documentation/w1/slaves: (0/1) Documentation/locking: (0/1) Documentation/devicetree: (0/5) Documentation/power: (1/1) Documentation/powerpc: (0/5) Documentation/arm: (1/0) Documentation/x86: (0/9) Documentation/x86/x86_64: (1/1) Documentation/scsi: (4/4) Documentation/filesystems: (2/9) Documentation/filesystems/nfs: (0/2) Documentation/cgroup-v1: (0/2) Documentation/kbuild: (0/4) Documentation/spi: (1/0) Documentation/virtual/kvm: (1/0) Documentation/scheduler: (0/2) Documentation/fb: (0/1) Documentation/block: (0/1) Documentation/networking: (6/37) Documentation/vm: (1/3) Then there are 364 subdirectories in Documentation/ with several files that are missing 00-INDEX alltogether (and another 120 with a single file and no 00-INDEX). I don't really have an opinion to whether or not we /should/ have 00-INDEX, but the above 00-INDEX should either be removed or be kept up to date. If we should keep the files, I can try to keep them updated, but I rather not if we just want to delete them anyway. As a starting point, remove all index-files and references to 00-INDEX and see where the discussion is going. Signed-off-by: Henrik Austad <henrik@austad.us> Acked-by: "Paul E. Pull xfs updates from Darrick Wong: "New features this cycle include the ability to relabel mounted filesystems, support for fallocated swapfiles, and using FUA for pure data O_DSYNC directio writes. With this cycle we begin to integrate online filesystem repair and refactor the growfs code in preparation for eventual subvolume support, though the road ahead for both features is quite long. There are also numerous refactorings of the iomap code to remove unnecessary log overhead, to disentangle some of the quota code, and to prepare for buffer head removal in a future upstream kernel. Metadata validation continues to improve, both in the hot path veifiers and the online filesystem check code. I anticipate sending a second pull request in a few days with more metadata validation improvements. This series has been run through a full xfstests run over the weekend and through a quick xfstests run against this morning's master, with no major failures reported. Summary: - Strengthen inode number and structure validation when allocating inodes. - Reduce pointless buffer allocations during cache miss - Use FUA for pure data O_DSYNC directio writes - Various iomap refactorings - Strengthen quota metadata verification to avoid unfixable broken quota - Make AGFL block freeing a deferred operation to avoid blowing out transaction reservations when running complex operations - Get rid of the log item descriptors to reduce log overhead - Fix various reflink bugs where inodes were double-joined to transactions - Don't issue discards when trimming unwritten extents - Refactor incore dquot initialization and retrieval interfaces - Fix some locking problmes in the quota scrub code - Strengthen btree structure checks in scrub code - Rewrite swapfile activation to use iomap and support unwritten extents - Make scrub exit to userspace sooner when corruptions or cross-referencing problems are found - Make scrub invoke the data fork scrubber directly on metadata inodes - Don't do background reclamation of post-eof and cow blocks when the fs is suspended - Fix secondary superblock buffer lifespan hinting - Refactor growfs to use table-dispatched functions instead of long stringy functions - Move growfs code to libxfs - Implement online fs label getting and setting - Introduce online filesystem repair (in a very limited capacity) - Fix unit conversion problems in the realtime freemap iteration functions - Various refactorings and cleanups in preparation to remove buffer heads in a future release - Reimplement the old bmap call with iomap - Remove direct buffer head accesses from seek hole/data - Various bug fixes" * tag 'xfs-4.18-merge-3' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/fs/xfs/xfs-linux: (121 commits) fs: use ->is_partially_uptodate in page_cache_seek_hole_data fs: remove the buffer_unwritten check in page_seek_hole_data fs: move page_cache_seek_hole_data to iomap.c xfs: use iomap_bmap iomap: add an iomap-based bmap implementation iomap: add a iomap_sector helper iomap: use __bio_add_page in iomap_dio_zero iomap: move IOMAP_F_BOUNDARY to gfs2 iomap: fix the comment describing IOMAP_NOWAIT iomap: inline data should be an iomap type, not a flag mm: split ->readpages calls to avoid non-contiguous pages lists mm: return an unsigned int from __do_page_cache_readahead mm: give the 'ret' variable a better name __do_page_cache_readahead block: add a lower-level bio_add_page interface xfs: fix error handling in xfs_refcount_insert() xfs: fix xfs_rtalloc_rec units xfs: strengthen rtalloc query range checks xfs: xfs_rtbuf_get should check the bmapi_read results xfs: xfs_rtword_t should be unsigned, not signed dax: change bdev_dax_supported() to support boolean returns ...

This driver is a logical device which provides an interface between the hypervisor and a management partition. This interface is like a message passing interface. This management partition is intended to provide an alternative to HMC-based system management. VMC enables the Management LPAR to provide basic logical partition functions: - Logical Partition Configuration - Boot, start, and stop actions for individual partitions - Display of partition status - Management of virtual Ethernet - Management of virtual Storage - Basic system management This driver is to be used for the POWER Virtual Management Channel Virtual Adapter on the PowerPC platform. 2018-03-16arch: remove tile portArnd Bergmann1-1/+0
The Tile architecture port was added by Chris Metcalf in 2010, and maintained until early 2018 when he orphaned it due to his departure from Mellanox, and nobody else stepped up to maintain it. The product line is still around in the form of the BlueField SoC, but no longer uses the Tile architecture. There are also still products for sale with Tile-GX SoCs, notably the Mikrotik CCR router family. The products all use old (linux-3.3) kernels with lots of patches and won't be upgraded by their manufacturers. There have been efforts to port both OpenWRT and Debian to these, but both projects have stalled and are very unlikely to be continued in the future. Given that we are reasonably sure that nobody is still using the port with an upstream kernel any more, it seems better to remove it now while the port is in a good shape than to let it bitrot for a few years first. I'm sending it separately from the other arm-soc driver changes to give it a little more visibility, once the subsystem is merged, we will likely keep this in the arm₋soc drivers branch or have the maintainers submit pull requests directly, depending on the patch volume. I have reviewed earlier versions in the past, and have reviewed the latest version in person during Linaro Connect BUD17. Here is my overall assessment of the subsystem: - There is clearly demand for this, both for the generic infrastructure and the specific OP-TEE implementation. - The code has gone through a large number of reviews, and the review comments have all been addressed, but the reviews were not coming up with serious issues any more and nobody volunteered to vouch for the quality. - The user space ioctl interface is sufficient to work with the OP-TEE driver, and it should in principle work with other TEE implementations that follow the GlobalPlatform[1] standards, but it might need to be extended in minor ways depending on specific requirements of future TEE implementations - The main downside of the API to me is how the user space is tied to the TEE implementation in hardware or firmware, but uses a generic way to communicate with it. This seems to be an inherent problem with what it is trying to do, and I could not come up with any better solution than what is implemented here. 2017-01-18rpmsg: Driver for user space endpoint interfaceBjorn Andersson1-0/+1
This driver allows rpmsg instances to expose access to rpmsg endpoints to user space processes. It provides a control interface, allowing userspace to export endpoints and an endpoint interface for each exposed endpoint. The implementation is based on prior art by Texas Instrument, Google, PetaLogix and was derived from a FreeRTOS performance statistics driver written by Michal Simek. The control interface provides a "create endpoint" ioctl, which is fed a name, source and destination address. The three values are used to create the endpoint, in a backend-specific way, and a rpmsg endpoint device is created - with the three parameters are available in sysfs for udev usage. E.g. to create an endpoint device for one of the Qualcomm SMD channel related to DIAG one would issue: struct rpmsg_endpoint_info info = { "DIAG_CNTL", 0, 0 }; int fd = open("/dev/rpmsg_ctrl0", O_RDWR); ioctl(fd, RPMSG_CREATE_EPT_IOCTL, &info); Each created endpoint device shows up as an individual character device in /dev, allowing permission to be controlled on a per-endpoint basis. The rpmsg endpoint will be created and destroyed following the opening and closing of the endpoint device, allowing rpmsg backends to open and close the physical channel, if supported by the wire protocol. Clarify this concept to avoid unnecessary padding. - When using __u64 to hold user pointers, blindly trying to do a cast to a void __user * may generate a warning on 32-bit systems about a cast from an integer to a pointer of different size. 2016-08-02nilfs2: move ioctl interface and disk layout to uapi separatelyRyusuke Konishi1-1/+1
The header file "include/linux/nilfs2_fs.h" is composed of parts for ioctl and disk format, and both are intended to be shared with user space programs. This moves them to the uapi directory "include/uapi/linux" splitting the file to "nilfs2_api.h" and "nilfs2_ondisk.h". The following minor changes are accompanied by this migration: - nilfs_direct_node struct in nilfs2/direct.h is converged to nilfs2_ondisk.h because it's an on-disk structure. - inline functions nilfs_rec_len_from_disk() and nilfs_rec_len_to_disk() are moved to nilfs2/dir.c. 2015-10-29lightnvm: Support for Open-Channel SSDsMatias Bjørling1-0/+1
Open-channel SSDs are devices that share responsibilities with the host in order to implement and maintain features that typical SSDs keep strictly in firmware. These include (i) the Flash Translation Layer (FTL), (ii) bad block management, and (iii) hardware units such as the flash controller, the interface controller, and large amounts of flash chips. In this way, Open-channels SSDs exposes direct access to their physical flash storage, while keeping a subset of the internal features of SSDs. LightNVM is a specification that gives support to Open-channel SSDs LightNVM allows the host to manage data placement, garbage collection, and parallelism. Device specific responsibilities such as bad block management, FTL extensions to support atomic IOs, or metadata persistence are still handled by the device. The implementation of LightNVM consists of two parts: core and (multiple) targets. The core implements functionality shared across targets. This is initialization, teardown and statistics. The targets implement the interface that exposes physical flash to user-space applications. Examples of such targets include key-value store, object-store, as well as traditional block devices, which can be application-specific. 2015-10-04stm class: Introduce an abstraction for System Trace Module devicesAlexander Shishkin1-0/+3
A System Trace Module (STM) is a device exporting data in System Trace Protocol (STP) format as defined by MIPI STP standards. Examples of such devices are Intel(R) Trace Hub and Coresight STM. This abstraction provides a unified interface for software trace sources to send their data over an STM device to a debug host. In order to do that, such a trace source needs to be assigned a pair of master/channel identifiers that all the data from this source will be tagged with. The STP decoder on the debug host side will use these master/channel tags to distinguish different trace streams from one another inside one STP stream. This abstraction provides a configfs-based policy management mechanism for dynamic allocation of these master/channel pairs based on trace source-supplied string identifier. It has the flexibility of being defined at runtime and at the same time (provided that the policy definition is aligned with the decoding end) consistency. For userspace trace sources, this abstraction provides write()-based and mmap()-based (if the underlying stm device allows this) output mechanism. For kernel-side trace sources, we provide "stm_source" device class that can be connected to an stm device at run time.
