2024-02-19ALSA: oxfw: add support for Miglia Harmony AudioTakashi Sakamoto1-1/+9
Miglia Technology ships Harmony Audio 2004. It uses Oxford Semiconductor OXFW970 for communication function in IEEE 1394 bus. This commit adds support for the model. In my opinion, the firmware of ASIC is really the initial stage, since it has the following quirks. * It skips several isochronous cycles to transmit isochronous packets when receiving any asynchronous transaction. * The value of dbc field in the transmitted packet is the number of accumulated quadlets in CIP payload, instead of the accumulated data blocks. Furthermore, the value includes the quadlets of CIP payload in the packet. * It neither supports AV/C Stream Format Information command nor AV/C Extended Stream Format Information command. * The vendor and model information in root directory of configuration ROM includes some mistakes. Additionally, when operating at 96.0 kHz, it often skips much isochronous cycles to transmit the isochronous packets. The issue is detected as cycle discontinuity and ALSA PCM application receives -EIO at any operation for PCM substream. 2021-10-28ALSA: oxfw: fix functional regression for Mackie Onyx 1640i in v5.14 or laterTakashi Sakamoto1-0/+8
A user reports functional regression for Mackie Onyx 1640i that the device generates slow sound with ALSA oxfw driver which supports media clock recovery. Although the device is based on OXFW971 ASIC, it does not transfer isochronous packet with own event frequency as expected. The device seems to adjust event frequency according to events in received isochronous packets in the beginning of packet streaming. This is unknown quirk. This commit fixes the regression to turn the recovery off in driver side. As a result, nominal frequency is used in duplex packet streaming between device and driver. For stability of sampling rate in events of transferred isochronous packet, 4,000 isochronous packets are skipped in the beginning of packet streaming. 2021-09-13ALSA: oxfw: fix transmission method for Loud models based on OXFW971Takashi Sakamoto1-5/+8
Loud Technologies Mackie Onyx 1640i (former model) is identified as the model which uses OXFW971. The analysis of packet dump shows that it transfers events in blocking method of IEC 61883-6, however the default behaviour of ALSA oxfw driver is for non-blocking method. This commit adds code to detect it assuming that all of loud models based on OXFW971 have such quirk. It brings no functional change except for alignment rule of PCM buffer. 2021-08-12ALSA: oxfw: fix functioal regression for silence in Apogee Duet FireWireTakashi Sakamoto1-2/+4
OXFW 971 has no function to use the value in syt field of received isochronous packet for playback timing generation. In kernel prepatch for v5.14, ALSA OXFW driver got change to send NO_INFO value in the field instead of actual timing value. The change brings Apogee Duet FireWire to generate no playback sound, while output meter moves. As long as I investigate, _any_ value in the syt field takes the device to generate sound. It's reasonable to think that the device just ignores data blocks in packet with NO_INFO value in its syt field for audio data processing. This commit adds a new flag for the quirk to fix regression. 2021-05-18ALSA: oxfw: add comment for the type of ASICsTakashi Sakamoto1-3/+19
ALSA OXFW supports two types of ASICS; OXFW970 and OXFW971. The former is known to have a quirk we call 'jumbo payload' that some isochronous cycles are skipped to transfer isochronous packets during handling asynchronous transaction. The quirk seems to correspond to firmware initially delivered by Oxford Semiconductor since the quirk is not confirmed for Mackie Onyx Satellite in which the revised firmware is available. The quirk is not confirmed in the latter. This commit adds code comment to describe the quirk. This reverts commit 0edabdfe89581669609eaac5f6a8d0ae6fe95e7f. I've explained that optional FireWire card for d.2 is also built-in to d.2 Pro, however it's wrong. The optional card uses DM1000 ASIC and has 'Mackie DJ Mixer' in its model name of configuration ROM. On the other hand, built-in FireWire card for d.2 Pro and d.4 Pro uses OXFW971 ASIC and has 'd.Pro' in its model name according to manuals and user experiences. The former card is not the card for d.2 Pro. They are similar in appearance but different internally. Mackie d.2 has an extension card for IEEE 1394 communication, which uses BridgeCo DM1000 ASIC. On the other hand, Mackie d.4 Pro has built-in function for IEEE 1394 communication by Oxford Semiconductor OXFW971, according to schematic diagram available in Mackie website. Although I misunderstood that Mackie d.2 Pro would be also a model with OXFW971, it's wrong. Mackie d.2 Pro is a model which includes the extension card as factory settings. character devices are released At present, in .remove callback of bus driver just decrease reference count of device for ALSA card instance. This delegates release of the device to a process in which the last of ALSA character device is released. On the other hand, the other drivers such as for devices on PCIe are programmed to block .remove callback of bus driver till all of ALSA character devices are released. For consistency of behaviour for whole drivers, this probably confuses users. This commit takes drivers in ALSA firewire stack to imitate the above behaviour. At present, private data of each driver in ALSA firewire stack is allocated/freed by kernel slab allocator for corresponding unit on IEEE 1394 bus. In this case, resource-managed slab allocator is available to release memory object automatically just before releasing device structure for the unit. This idea can prevent runtime from memory leak due to programming mistakes. This commit uses the allocator for the private data. These drivers already use reference counter to maintain lifetime of device structure for the unit by a pair of fw_unit_get()/fw_unit_put(). The cause is that the driver manages to register two rawmidi instances with the same device number 0. This is a regression introduced since kernel 4.7. This commit fixes the regression, by fixing up device property after discovering stream formats. As of kernel 4.10, ALSA OXFW driver has no entry for Onyx 1640i produced by Mackie (Loud Technologies). This commit supplement it. I note that there're two models produced by Mackie (Loud Technologies), which have the same name 'Onyx 1640i'. The former model based on OXFW970, the latter model based on Dice. This is probably due to low quality of communication of OXFW series. Additionally, the tester reports his or her experiences to get unexpected result at higher sampling transmission frequency as 88.2/96.0 kHz. As long as I investigate SCS.1m, this model reports to transfer/receive PCM data channels/MIDI conformant data channels in tx/rx AMDTP packet. There's a contradiction that this model actually has no analog/digital capture port for PCM frames and no physical MIDI ports. I guess that SCS.1d also has the contradiction. This model has no analog/digital ports for PCM frames and no physical MIDI ports, thus it requires no streaming functionality. This commit adds some modification codes to handle the contradiction, as much as possible. Unfortunately, this module adds one PCM playback substream for SCS.1d so as SCS.1m. Now ALSA oxfw driver gains functionalities which scs1x module has. This commit obsoletes the scs1x module, and adds a line of MODULE_ALIAS to load oxfw module instead of scs1x module. In scs1x module, the name of 'shortname' field is fixed as 'SCS1x'. This field is used to name MIDI ports for both of SCS.1m and SCS.1d. This is not good because typically some SCS.1m and SCS.1d are used in the same system. It's better to distinguish them according to name of the ports. This commit applies model name in config ROM to the 'shortname'. For the name of 'driver' and 'longname', this commit uses the same way applied to the other models. This change may not bring disadvantages to users because userspace applications use ALSA rawmidi or seq interface and these interfaces are not influenced by them directly. Stanton Controllers and Systems 1 (SCS.1) series is supported by ALSA scs1x driver. This driver just supports MIDI functionality. On the other hand, models in this series are based on OXFW971 and ALSA OXFW driver can support them. SCS.1 series has MIDI functionality to control its surface state such as LED lighting. When operating physical knobs and faders, the models generate MIDI messages. These MIDI messages are transferred by asynchronous transactions. These transactions are really model-specific and ALSA OXFW driver requires the functionality so as scs1x module implements. field in tx CIP header Mackie Onyx Satellite has two usage; standalone and with base station. These two modes has different stream formats. In standalone mode, rx data block includes 2 Multi Bit Linear Audio (MBLA) data channels and tx data block includes 2. With base station, they're 6 and 2. Although, with base station, the actual tx packet include wrong value in 'dbs' field in its CIP header. This quirk causes packet streaming layer to detect packet discontinuity and to stop PCM substream. This is a response of 'single' subfunction 'extended stream format information' command in AV/C Stream Format Information Specification 1.1.
