2024-04-29s390: Compile kernel with -fPIC and link with -no-pieSumanth Korikkar1-7/+2
When the kernel is built with CONFIG_PIE_BUILD option enabled it uses dynamic symbols, for which the linker does not allow more than 64K number of entries. This can break features like kpatch. Hence, whenever possible the kernel is built with CONFIG_PIE_BUILD option disabled. For that support of unaligned symbols generated by linker scripts in the compiler is necessary. However, older compilers might lack such support. In that case the build process resorts to CONFIG_PIE_BUILD option-enabled build. Compile object files with -fPIC option and then link the kernel binary with -no-pie linker option. As result, the dynamic symbols are not generated and not only kpatch feature succeeds, but also the whole CONFIG_PIE_BUILD option-enabled code could be dropped. 2024-04-17s390/expoline: Make modules use kernel expolinesVasily Gorbik1-6/+0
Currently, kernel modules contain their own set of expoline thunks. In the case of EXPOLINE_EXTERN, this involves postlinking of precompiled expoline.o. expoline.o is also necessary for out-of-source tree module builds. Now that the kernel modules area is less than 4 GB away from kernel expoline thunks, make modules use kernel expolines. Also make EXPOLINE_EXTERN the default if the compiler supports it. This simplifies build and aligns with the approach adopted by other architectures. Signed-off-by: Vasily Gorbik <gor@linux.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Alexander Gordeev <agordeev@linux.ibm.com>

2024-02-20s390: compile relocatable kernel without -fPIEJosh Poimboeuf1-1/+7
On s390, currently kernel uses the '-fPIE' compiler flag for compiling vmlinux. This has a few problems: - It uses dynamic symbols (.dynsym), for which the linker refuses to allow more than 64k sections. This can break features which use '-ffunction-sections' and '-fdata-sections', including kpatch-build [1] and Function Granular KASLR. - It unnecessarily uses GOT relocations, adding an extra layer of indirection for many memory accesses. Instead of using '-fPIE', resolve all the relocations at link time and then manually adjust any absolute relocations (R_390_64) during boot. This is done by first telling the linker to preserve all relocations during the vmlinux link. (Note this is harmless: they are later stripped in the vmlinux.bin link.) Then use the 'relocs' tool to find all absolute relocations (R_390_64) which apply to allocatable sections. The offsets of those relocations are saved in a special section which is then used to adjust the relocations during boot. (Note: For some reason, Clang occasionally creates a GOT reference, even without '-fPIE'. So Clang-compiled kernels have a GOT, which needs to be adjusted.) On my mostly-defconfig kernel, this reduces kernel text size by ~1.3%. [1] https://github.com/dynup/kpatch/issues/1284 [2] https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2023-June/622872.html [3] https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-patches/2023-August/625986.html Compiler consideration: Gcc recently implemented an optimization [2] for loading symbols without explicit alignment, aligning with the IBM Z ELF ABI. This ABI mandates symbols to reside on a 2-byte boundary, enabling the use of the larl instruction. However, kernel linker scripts may still generate unaligned symbols. To address this, a new -munaligned-symbols option has been introduced [3] in recent gcc versions. This option has to be used with future gcc versions. Older Clang lacks support for handling unaligned symbols generated by kernel linker scripts when the kernel is built without -fPIE. However, future versions of Clang will include support for the -munaligned-symbols option. When the support is unavailable, compile the kernel with -fPIE to maintain the existing behavior. In addition to it: move vmlinux.relocs to safe relocation When the kernel is built with CONFIG_KERNEL_UNCOMPRESSED, the entire uncompressed vmlinux.bin is positioned in the bzImage decompressor image at the default kernel LMA of 0x100000, enabling it to be executed in-place. However, the size of .vmlinux.relocs could be large enough to cause an overlap with the uncompressed kernel at the address 0x100000. To address this issue, .vmlinux.relocs is positioned after the .rodata.compressed in the bzImage. Nevertheless, in this configuration, vmlinux.relocs will overlap with the .bss section of vmlinux.bin. To overcome that, move vmlinux.relocs to a safe location before clearing .bss and handling relocs. Compile warning fix from Sumanth Korikkar: When kernel is built with CONFIG_LD_ORPHAN_WARN and -fno-PIE, there are several warnings: ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.iplt' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.head.text' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.init.text' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' ld: warning: orphan section `.rela.rodata.cst8' from `arch/s390/kernel/head64.o' being placed in section `.rela.dyn' Orphan sections are sections that exist in an object file but don't have a corresponding output section in the final executable. ld raises a warning when it identifies such sections. Eliminate the warning by placing all .rela orphan sections in .rela.dyn and raise an error when size of .rela.dyn is greater than zero. i.e. Dont just neglect orphan sections. This is similar to adjustment performed in x86, where kernel is built with -fno-PIE. commit 5354e84598f2 ("x86/build: Add asserts for unwanted sections") [sumanthk@linux.ibm.com: rebased Josh Poimboeuf patches and move vmlinux.relocs to safe location] [hca@linux.ibm.com: merged compile warning fix from Sumanth] Tested-by: Sumanth Korikkar <sumanthk@linux.ibm.com> Acked-by: Vasily Gorbik <gor@linux.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Josh Poimboeuf <jpoimboe@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Sumanth Korikkar <sumanthk@linux.ibm.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240219132734.22881-4-sumanthk@linux.ibm.com Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20240219132734.22881-5-sumanthk@linux.ibm.com Signed-off-by: Heiko Carstens <hca@linux.ibm.com>

2023-10-28kbuild: unify vdso_install rulesMasahiro Yamada1-3/+3
Currently, there is no standard implementation for vdso_install, leading to various issues: 1. Code duplication Many architectures duplicate similar code just for copying files to the install destination. Some architectures (arm, sparc, x86) create build-id symlinks, introducing more code duplication. 2. Unintended updates of in-tree build artifacts The vdso_install rule depends on the vdso files to install. It may update in-tree build artifacts. This can be problematic, as explained in commit 19514fc665ff ("arm, kbuild: make "make install" not depend on vmlinux"). 3. Broken code in some architectures Makefile code is often copied from one architecture to another without proper adaptation. 'make vdso_install' for parisc does not work. 'make vdso_install' for s390 installs vdso64, but not vdso32. To address these problems, this commit introduces a generic vdso_install rule. Architectures that support vdso_install need to define vdso-install-y in arch/*/Makefile. vdso-install-y lists the files to install. For example, arch/x86/Makefile looks like this: vdso-install-$(CONFIG_X86_64) += arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdso64.so.dbg vdso-install-$(CONFIG_X86_X32_ABI) += arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdsox32.so.dbg vdso-install-$(CONFIG_X86_32) += arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdso32.so.dbg vdso-install-$(CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION) += arch/x86/entry/vdso/vdso32.so.dbg These files will be installed to $(MODLIB)/vdso/ with the .dbg suffix, if exists, stripped away. vdso-install-y can optionally take the second field after the colon separator. This is needed because some architectures install a vdso file as a different base name. The following is a snippet from arch/arm64/Makefile. vdso-install-$(CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO) += arch/arm64/kernel/vdso32/vdso.so.dbg:vdso32.so This will rename vdso.so.dbg to vdso32.so during installation. If such architectures change their implementation so that the base names match, this workaround will go away. 2022-11-08s390: always build relocatable kernelHeiko Carstens1-2/+0
Nathan Chancellor reported several link errors on s390 with CONFIG_RELOCATABLE disabled, after binutils commit 906f69cf65da ("IBM zSystems: Issue error for *DBL relocs on misaligned symbols"). The binutils commit reveals potential miscompiles that might have happened already before with linker script defined symbols at odd addresses. A similar bug was recently fixed in the kernel with commit c9305b6c1f52 ("s390: fix nospec table alignments"). See https://github.com/ClangBuiltLinux/linux/issues/1747 for an analysis from Ulich Weigand. Therefore always build a relocatable kernel to avoid this problem. 2022-10-02kbuild: remove head-y syntaxMasahiro Yamada1-2/+0
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. 2022-06-09gcc-12: disable '-Warray-bounds' universally for nowLinus Torvalds1-9/+1
In commit 8b202ee21839 ("s390: disable -Warray-bounds") the s390 people disabled the '-Warray-bounds' warning for gcc-12, because the new logic in gcc would cause warnings for their use of the S390_lowcore macro, which accesses absolute pointers. It turns out gcc-12 has many other issues in this area, so this takes that s390 warning disable logic, and turns it into a kernel build config entry instead. Part of the intent is that we can make this all much more targeted, and use this conflig flag to disable it in only particular configurations that cause problems, with the s390 case as an example: select GCC12_NO_ARRAY_BOUNDS and we could do that for other configuration cases that cause issues. Or we could possibly use the CONFIG_CC_NO_ARRAY_BOUNDS thing in a more targeted way, and disable the warning only for particular uses: again the s390 case as an example: KBUILD_CFLAGS_DECOMPRESSOR += $(if $(CONFIG_CC_NO_ARRAY_BOUNDS),-Wno-array-bounds) but this ends up just doing it globally in the top-level Makefile, since the current issues are spread fairly widely all over: KBUILD_CFLAGS-$(CONFIG_CC_NO_ARRAY_BOUNDS) += -Wno-array-bounds We'll try to limit this later, since the gcc-12 problems are rare enough that *much* of the kernel can be built with it without disabling this warning. Wrapping that with absolute_pointer() works, but gcc no longer knows that a 12 bit displacement is sufficient to access lowcore. So it emits instructions like 'lghi %r1,0; l %rx,xxx(%r1)' instead of a single load/store instruction. As s390 stores variables often read/written in lowcore, this is considered problematic. Therefore disable -Warray-bounds on s390 for gcc-12 for the time being, until there is a better solution. 2022-03-10s390: raise minimum supported machine generation to z10Vasily Gorbik1-6/+0
Machine generations up to z9 (released in May 2006) have been officially out of service for several years now (z9 end of service - January 31, 2019). No distributions build kernels supporting those old machine generations anymore, except Debian, which seems to pick the oldest supported generation. The team supporting Debian on s390 has been notified about the change. Raising minimum supported machine generation to z10 helps to reduce maintenance cost and effectively remove code, which is not getting enough testing coverage due to lack of older hardware and distributions support. Besides that this unblocks some optimization opportunities and allows to use wider instruction set in asm files for future features implementation. Due to this change spectre mitigation and usercopy implementations could be drastically simplified and many newer instructions could be converted from ".insn" encoding to instruction names. 2022-03-10s390/nospec: add an option to use thunk-externVasily Gorbik1-5/+9
Currently with -mindirect-branch=thunk and -mfunction-return=thunk compiler options expoline thunks are put into individual COMDAT group sections. s390 is the only architecture which has group sections and it has implications for kpatch and objtool tools support. Using -mindirect-branch=thunk-extern and -mfunction-return=thunk-extern is an alternative, which comes with a need to generate all required expoline thunks manually. Unfortunately modules area is too far away from the kernel image, and expolines from the kernel image cannon be used. But since all new distributions (except Debian) build kernels for machine generations newer than z10, where "exrl" instruction is available, that leaves only 16 expolines thunks possible. Provide an option to build the kernel with -mindirect-branch=thunk-extern and -mfunction-return=thunk-extern for z10 or newer. This also requires to postlink expoline thunks into all modules explicitly. Currently modules already contain most expolines anyhow. Unfortunately -mindirect-branch=thunk-extern and -mfunction-return=thunk-extern options support is broken in gcc <= 11.2. Additional compile test is required to verify proper gcc support. 2021-11-16s390/vdso: filter out -mstack-guard and -mstack-sizeSven Schnelle1-4/+6
When CONFIG_VMAP_STACK is disabled, the user can enable CONFIG_STACK_CHECK, which adds a stack overflow check to each C function in the kernel. This is also done for functions in the vdso page. These functions are run in user context and user stack sizes are usually different to what the kernel uses. This might trigger the stack check although the stack size is valid. Therefore filter the -mstack-guard and -mstack-size flags when compiling vdso C files. s390 is the only architecture which allows to set the -mwarn-dynamicstack compile option. This however will also always generate a warning with system call stack randomization, which uses alloca to generate some random sized stack frame. On the other hand Linus just enabled "-Werror" by default with commit 3fe617ccafd6 ("Enable '-Werror' by default for all kernel builds"), which means compiles will always fail by default. This is requird for moving these syscalls away from the signal frame to the vdso. Note that this patch effectively disables CONFIG_COMPAT when using clang to compile the kernel. clang doesn't support 31 bit mode. We want to redirect sigreturn and restart_syscall to the vdso. With inlined checks one particular case hitting stack overflow is fs sync on xfs filesystem: #0 [9a0681e8] 704 bytes check_usage at 34b1fc #1 [9a0684a8] 432 bytes check_usage at 34c710 #2 [9a068658] 1048 bytes validate_chain at 35044a #3 [9a068a70] 312 bytes __lock_acquire at 3559fe #4 [9a068ba8] 440 bytes lock_acquire at 3576ee #5 [9a068d60] 104 bytes _raw_spin_lock at 21b44e0 #6 [9a068dc8] 1992 bytes enqueue_entity at 2dbf72 #7 [9a069590] 1496 bytes enqueue_task_fair at 2df5f0 #8 [9a069b68] 64 bytes ttwu_do_activate at 28f438 #9 [9a069ba8] 552 bytes try_to_wake_up at 298c4c #10 [9a069dd0] 168 bytes wake_up_worker at 23f97c #11 [9a069e78] 200 bytes insert_work at 23fc2e #12 [9a069f40] 648 bytes __queue_work at 2487c0 #13 [9a06a1c8] 200 bytes __queue_delayed_work at 24db28 #14 [9a06a290] 248 bytes mod_delayed_work_on at 24de84 #15 [9a06a388] 24 bytes kblockd_mod_delayed_work_on at 153e2a0 #16 [9a06a3a0] 288 bytes __blk_mq_delay_run_hw_queue at 158168c #17 [9a06a4c0] 192 bytes blk_mq_run_hw_queue at 1581a3c #18 [9a06a580] 184 bytes blk_mq_sched_insert_requests at 15a2192 #19 [9a06a638] 1024 bytes blk_mq_flush_plug_list at 1590f3a #20 [9a06aa38] 704 bytes blk_flush_plug_list at 1555028 #21 [9a06acf8] 320 bytes schedule at 219e476 #22 [9a06ae38] 760 bytes schedule_timeout at 21b0aac #23 [9a06b130] 408 bytes wait_for_common at 21a1706 #24 [9a06b2c8] 360 bytes xfs_buf_iowait at fa1540 #25 [9a06b430] 256 bytes __xfs_buf_submit at fadae6 #26 [9a06b530] 264 bytes xfs_buf_read_map at fae3f6 #27 [9a06b638] 656 bytes xfs_trans_read_buf_map at 10ac9a8 #28 [9a06b8c8] 304 bytes xfs_btree_kill_root at e72426 #29 [9a06b9f8] 288 bytes xfs_btree_lookup_get_block at e7bc5e #30 [9a06bb18] 624 bytes xfs_btree_lookup at e7e1a6 #31 [9a06bd88] 2664 bytes xfs_alloc_ag_vextent_near at dfa070 #32 [9a06c7f0] 144 bytes xfs_alloc_ag_vextent at dff3ca #33 [9a06c880] 1128 bytes xfs_alloc_vextent at e05fce #34 [9a06cce8] 584 bytes xfs_bmap_btalloc at e58342 #35 [9a06cf30] 1336 bytes xfs_bmapi_write at e618de #36 [9a06d468] 776 bytes xfs_iomap_write_allocate at ff678e #37 [9a06d770] 720 bytes xfs_map_blocks at f82af8 #38 [9a06da40] 928 bytes xfs_writepage_map at f83cd6 #39 [9a06dde0] 320 bytes xfs_do_writepage at f85872 #40 [9a06df20] 1320 bytes write_cache_pages at 73dfe8 #41 [9a06e448] 208 bytes xfs_vm_writepages at f7f892 #42 [9a06e518] 88 bytes do_writepages at 73fe6a #43 [9a06e570] 872 bytes __writeback_single_inode at a20cb6 #44 [9a06e8d8] 664 bytes writeback_sb_inodes at a23be2 #45 [9a06eb70] 296 bytes __writeback_inodes_wb at a242e0 #46 [9a06ec98] 928 bytes wb_writeback at a2500e #47 [9a06f038] 848 bytes wb_do_writeback at a260ae #48 [9a06f388] 536 bytes wb_workfn at a28228 #49 [9a06f5a0] 1088 bytes process_one_work at 24a234 #50 [9a06f9e0] 1120 bytes worker_thread at 24ba26 #51 [9a06fe40] 104 bytes kthread at 26545a #52 [9a06fea8] kernel_thread_starter at 21b6b62 To be able to increase the stack size to 64k reuse LLILL instruction in __switch_to function to load 64k - STACK_FRAME_OVERHEAD - __PT_SIZE (65192) value as unsigned. 2018-10-09s390/kasan: double the stack sizeVasily Gorbik1-1/+1
Kasan stack instrumentation pads stack variables with redzones, which increases stack frames size significantly. Stack sizes are increased from 16k to 32k in the code, as well as for the kernel stack overflow detection option (CHECK_STACK).
