2012-06-06x86/debug: Add KERN_<LEVEL> to bare printks, convert printks to pr_<level>Joe Perches1-15/+14
Use a more current logging style: - Bare printks should have a KERN_<LEVEL> for consistency's sake - Add pr_fmt where appropriate - Neaten some macro definitions - Convert some Ok output to OK - Use "%s: ", __func__ in pr_fmt for summit - Convert some printks to pr_<level> Message output is not identical in all cases. 2012-01-29PM / Sleep: Introduce "late suspend" and "early resume" of devicesRafael J. Wysocki1-6/+5
The current device suspend/resume phases during system-wide power transitions appear to be insufficient for some platforms that want to use the same callback routines for saving device states and related operations during runtime suspend/resume as well as during system suspend/resume. In principle, they could point their .suspend_noirq() and .resume_noirq() to the same callback routines as their .runtime_suspend() and .runtime_resume(), respectively, but at least some of them require device interrupts to be enabled while the code in those routines is running. It also makes sense to have device suspend-resume callbacks that will be executed with runtime PM disabled and with device interrupts enabled in case someone needs to run some special code in that context during system-wide power transitions. Apart from this, .suspend_noirq() and .resume_noirq() were introduced as a workaround for drivers using shared interrupts and failing to prevent their interrupt handlers from accessing suspended hardware. It appears to be better not to use them for other porposes, or we may have to deal with some serious confusion (which seems to be happening already). For the above reasons, introduce new device suspend/resume phases, "late suspend" and "early resume" (and analogously for hibernation) whose callback will be executed with runtime PM disabled and with device interrupts enabled and whose callback pointers generally may point to runtime suspend/resume routines. 2012-01-13module_param: make bool parameters really bool (arch)Rusty Russell1-8/+8
module_param(bool) used to counter-intuitively take an int. In fddd5201 (mid-2009) we allowed bool or int/unsigned int using a messy trick. It's time to remove the int/unsigned int option. For this version it'll simply give a warning, but it'll break next kernel version. Signed-off-by: Rusty Russell <rusty@rustcorp.com.au>
2011-09-27doc: fix broken referencesPaul Bolle1-2/+0
There are numerous broken references to Documentation files (in other Documentation files, in comments, etc.). These broken references are caused by typo's in the references, and by renames or removals of the Documentation files. Some broken references are simply odd. We don't want to export the pm_idle function pointer to modules. Currently CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE w/ CONFIG_APM_MODULE forces us to. CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE is of dubious value, it runs only on 32-bit uniprocessor laptops that are over 10 years old. It calls into the BIOS during idle, and is known to cause a number of machines to fail. Removing CONFIG_APM_CPU_IDLE and will allow us to stop exporting pm_idle. 2011-05-11PM: Remove sysdev suspend, resume and shutdown operationsRafael J. Wysocki1-4/+0

2011-04-20PM: Add missing syscore_suspend() and syscore_resume() callsRafael J. Wysocki1-0/+5
Device suspend/resume infrastructure is used not only by the suspend and hibernate code in kernel/power, but also by APM, Xen and the kexec jump feature. However, commit 40dc166cb5dddbd36aa4ad11c03915ea (PM / Core: Introduce struct syscore_ops for core subsystems PM) failed to add syscore_suspend() and syscore_resume() calls to that code, which generally leads to breakage when the features in question are used. 2011-03-15PM: Drop pm_flags that is not necessaryRafael J. Wysocki1-3/+2
The variable pm_flags is used to prevent APM from being enabled along with ACPI, which would lead to problems. However, acpi_init() is always called before apm_init() and after acpi_init() has returned, it is known whether or not ACPI will be used. Namely, if acpi_disabled is not set after acpi_init() has returned, this means that ACPI is enabled. Thus, it is sufficient to check acpi_disabled in apm_init() to prevent APM from being enabled in parallel with ACPI. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2010-10-15llseek: automatically add .llseek fopArnd Bergmann1-0/+1
All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a .llseek pointer. The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek. New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code relies on calling seek on the device file. The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle. Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window. Many thanks to Julia Lawall for helping me learn to write a semantic patch that does all this. ===== begin semantic patch ===== // This adds an llseek= method to all file operations, // as a preparation for making no_llseek the default. // // The rules are // - use no_llseek explicitly if we do nonseekable_open // - use seq_lseek for sequential files // - use default_llseek if we know we access f_pos // - use noop_llseek if we know we don't access f_pos, // but we still want to allow users to call lseek // @ open1 exists @ identifier nested_open; @@ nested_open(...) { <+... nonseekable_open(...) ...+> } @ open exists@ identifier open_f; identifier i, f; identifier open1.nested_open; @@ int open_f(struct inode *i, struct file *f) { <+... 2009-06-12PM core: rename suspend and resume functionsAlan Stern1-7/+7
This patch (as1241) renames a bunch of functions in the PM core. Rather than go through a boring list of name changes, suffice it to say that in the end we have a bunch of pairs of functions: device_resume_noirq dpm_resume_noirq device_resume dpm_resume device_complete dpm_complete device_suspend_noirq dpm_suspend_noirq device_suspend dpm_suspend device_prepare dpm_prepare in which device_X does the X operation on a single device and dpm_X invokes device_X for all devices in the dpm_list. In addition, the old dpm_power_up and device_resume_noirq have been combined into a single function (dpm_resume_noirq). Lastly, dpm_suspend_start and dpm_resume_end are the renamed versions of the former top-level device_suspend and device_resume routines. 2009-06-12PM: Rename device_power_down/up()Magnus Damm1-4/+4
Rename the functions performing "_noirq" dev_pm_ops operations from device_power_down() and device_power_up() to device_suspend_noirq() and device_resume_noirq(). The new function names are chosen to show that the functions are responsible for calling the _noirq() versions to finalize the suspend/resume operation. The current function names do not perform power down/up anymore so the names may be misleading. 2009-03-30PM: Rework handling of interrupts during suspend-resumeRafael J. Wysocki1-4/+11
Use the functions introduced in by the previous patch, suspend_device_irqs(), resume_device_irqs() and check_wakeup_irqs(), to rework the handling of interrupts during suspend (hibernation) and resume. Namely, interrupts will only be disabled on the CPU right before suspending sysdevs, while device drivers will be prevented from receiving interrupts, with the help of the new helper function, before their "late" suspend callbacks run (and analogously during resume). In addition, since the device interrups are now disabled before the CPU has turned all interrupts off and the CPU will ACK the interrupts setting the IRQ_PENDING bit for them, check in sysdev_suspend() if any wake-up interrupts are pending and abort suspend if that's the case. 2009-03-18x86: cpumask: update 32-bit APM not to mug current->cpus_allowedRusty Russell1-103/+145
Impact: cleanup, avoid cpumask games The APM code wants to run on CPU 0: we create an "on_cpu0" wrapper which uses work_on_cpu() if we're not already on cpu 0. This introduces a new failure mode: -ENOMEM, so we add an explicit err arg and handle Linux-style errnos in apm_err(). 2008-06-10Introduce new top level suspend and hibernation callbacksRafael J. Wysocki1-4/+4
Introduce 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops' ('ext' meaning 'extended') representing suspend and hibernation operations for bus types, device classes, device types and device drivers. Modify the PM core to use 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops' objects, if defined, instead of the ->suspend(), ->resume(), ->suspend_late(), and ->resume_early() callbacks (the old callbacks will be considered as legacy and gradually phased out). The main purpose of doing this is to separate suspend (aka S2RAM and standby) callbacks from hibernation callbacks in such a way that the new callbacks won't take arguments and the semantics of each of them will be clearly specified. This has been requested for multiple times by many people, including Linus himself, and the reason is that within the current scheme if ->resume() is called, for example, it's difficult to say why it's been called (ie. is it a resume from RAM or from hibernation or a suspend/hibernation failure etc.?). The second purpose is to make the suspend/hibernation callbacks more flexible so that device drivers can handle more than they can within the current scheme. For example, some drivers may need to prevent new children of the device from being registered before their ->suspend() callbacks are executed or they may want to carry out some operations requiring the availability of some other devices, not directly bound via the parent-child relationship, in order to prepare for the execution of ->suspend(), etc. Ultimately, we'd like to stop using the freezing of tasks for suspend and therefore the drivers' suspend/hibernation code will have to take care of the handling of the user space during suspend/hibernation. That, in turn, would be difficult within the current scheme, without the new ->prepare() and ->complete() callbacks. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2008-04-27fix idle (arch, acpi and apm) and lockdepPeter Zijlstra1-0/+3
OK, so 25-mm1 gave a lockdep error which made me look into this. The first thing that I noticed was the horrible mess; the second thing I saw was hacks like: 71e93d15612c61c2e26a169567becf088e71b8ff The problem is that arch idle routines are somewhat inconsitent with their IRQ state handling and instead of fixing _that_, we go paper over the problem. So the thing I've tried to do is set a standard for idle routines and fix them all up to adhere to that. So the rules are: idle routines are entered with IRQs disabled idle routines will exit with IRQs enabled Nearly all already did this in one form or another. Merge the 32 and 64 bit bits so they no longer have different bugs. As for the actual lockdep warning; __sti_mwait() did a plainly un-annotated irq-enable.
