2012-01-03fs: move code out of buffer.cAl Viro1-1/+0
Move invalidate_bdev, block_sync_page into fs/block_dev.c. Export kill_bdev as well, so brd doesn't have to open code it. Reduce buffer_head.h requirement accordingly. Removed a rather large comment from invalidate_bdev, as it looked a bit obsolete to bother moving. The small comment replacing it says enough. 2010-12-16PM / Hibernate: Restore old swap signature to avoid user space breakageRafael J. Wysocki1-1/+1
Commit 3624eb0 (PM / Hibernate: Modify signature used to mark swap) attempted to modify hibernate signature used to mark swap partitions containing hibernation images, so that old kernels don't try to handle compressed images. However, this change broke resume from hibernation on Fedora 14 that apparently doesn't pass the resume= argument to the kernel and tries to trigger resume from early user space. This doesn't work, because the signature is now different, so the old signature has to be restored to avoid the problem. Addresses https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22732 . 2010-12-06PM / Hibernate: Use async I/O when reading compressed hibernation imageBojan Smojver1-15/+38
This is a fix for reading LZO compressed image using async I/O. Essentially, instead of having just one page into which we keep reading blocks from swap, we allocate enough of them to cover the largest compressed size and then let block I/O pick them all up. Once we have them all (and here we wait), we decompress them, as usual. Obviously, the very first block we still pick up synchronously, because we need to know the size of the lot before we pick up the rest. Also fixed the copyright line, which I've forgotten before. 2010-11-13block: clean up blkdev_get() wrappers and their usersTejun Heo1-2/+2
After recent blkdev_get() modifications, open_by_devnum() and open_bdev_exclusive() are simple wrappers around blkdev_get(). Replace them with blkdev_get_by_dev() and blkdev_get_by_path(). blkdev_get_by_dev() is identical to open_by_devnum(). blkdev_get_by_path() is slightly different in that it doesn't automatically add %FMODE_EXCL to @mode. All users are converted. Most conversions are mechanical and don't introduce any behavior difference. There are several exceptions. * btrfs now sets FMODE_EXCL in btrfs_device->mode, so there's no reason to OR it explicitly on blkdev_put(). * gfs2, nilfs2 and the generic mount_bdev() now set FMODE_EXCL in sb->s_mode. * With the above changes, sb->s_mode now always should contain FMODE_EXCL. WARN_ON_ONCE() added to kill_block_super() to detect errors. The new blkdev_get_*() functions are with proper docbook comments. While at it, add function description to blkdev_get() too. 2010-11-13block: make blkdev_get/put() handle exclusive accessTejun Heo1-2/+3
Over time, block layer has accumulated a set of APIs dealing with bdev open, close, claim and release. * blkdev_get/put() are the primary open and close functions. * bd_claim/release() deal with exclusive open. * open/close_bdev_exclusive() are combination of open and claim and the other way around, respectively. * bd_link/unlink_disk_holder() to create and remove holder/slave symlinks. * open_by_devnum() wraps bdget() + blkdev_get(). The interface is a bit confusing and the decoupling of open and claim makes it impossible to properly guarantee exclusive access as in-kernel open + claim sequence can disturb the existing exclusive open even before the block layer knows the current open if for another exclusive access. Reorganize the interface such that, * blkdev_get() is extended to include exclusive access management. @holder argument is added and, if is @FMODE_EXCL specified, it will gain exclusive access atomically w.r.t. other exclusive accesses. * blkdev_put() is similarly extended. It now takes @mode argument and if @FMODE_EXCL is set, it releases an exclusive access. Also, when the last exclusive claim is released, the holder/slave symlinks are removed automatically. * bd_claim/release() and close_bdev_exclusive() are no longer necessary and either made static or removed. * bd_link_disk_holder() remains the same but bd_unlink_disk_holder() is no longer necessary and removed. * open_bdev_exclusive() becomes a simple wrapper around lookup_bdev() and blkdev_get(). It also has an unexpected extra bdev_read_only() test which probably should be moved into blkdev_get(). * open_by_devnum() is modified to take @holder argument and pass it to blkdev_get(). Most of bdev open/close operations are unified into blkdev_get/put() and most exclusive accesses are tested atomically at the open time (as it should). This cleans up code and removes some, both valid and invalid, but unnecessary all the same, corner cases. open_bdev_exclusive() and open_by_devnum() can use further cleanup - rename to blkdev_get_by_path() and blkdev_get_by_devt() and drop special features. Well, let's leave them for another day. Most conversions are straight-forward. drbd conversion is a bit more involved as there was some reordering, but the logic should stay the same. 2010-09-09swap: revert special hibernation allocationHugh Dickins1-3/+3
Please revert 2.6.36-rc commit d2997b1042ec150616c1963b5e5e919ffd0b0ebf "hibernation: freeze swap at hibernation". It complicated matters by adding a second swap allocation path, just for hibernation; without in any way fixing the issue that it was intended to address - page reclaim after fixing the hibernation image might free swap from a page already imaged as swapcache, letting its swap be reallocated to store a different page of the image: resulting in data corruption if the imaged page were freed as clean then swapped back in. Pages freed to si->swap_map were still in danger of being reallocated by the alternative allocation path. I guess it inadvertently fixed slow SSD swap allocation for hibernation, as reported by Nigel Cunningham: by missing out the discards that occur on the usual swap allocation path; but that was unintentional, and needs a separate fix. 2010-08-09hibernation: freeze swap at hibernationKAMEZAWA Hiroyuki1-3/+3
When taking a memory snapshot in hibernate_snapshot(), all (directly called) memory allocations use GFP_ATOMIC. Hence swap misusage during hibernation never occurs. But from a pessimistic point of view, there is no guarantee that no page allcation has __GFP_WAIT. It is better to have a global indication "we enter hibernation, don't use swap!". This patch tries to freeze new-swap-allocation during hibernation. (All user processes are frozenm so swapin is not a concern). This way, no updates will happen to swap_map[] between hibernate_snapshot() and save_image(). Swap is thawed when swsusp_free() is called. We can be assured that swap corruption will not occur. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo1-0/+1
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. At least on some machines it is necessary to prepare the ACPI firmware for the restoration of the system memory state from the hibernation image if the "platform" mode of hibernation has been used. Namely, in that cases we need to disable the GPEs before replacing the "boot" kernel with the "frozen" kernel (cf. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7887). After the restore they will be re-enabled by hibernation_ops->finish(), but if the restore fails, they have to be re-enabled by the restore code explicitly. For this purpose we can introduce two additional hibernation operations, called pre_restore() and restore_cleanup() and call them from the restore code path. Still, they should be called if the "platform" mode of hibernation has been used, so we need to pass the information about the hibernation mode from the "frozen" kernel to the "boot" kernel in the image header. Apparently, we can't drop the disabling of GPEs before the restore because of Bug #7887 .  We also can't do it unconditionally, because the GPEs wouldn't have been enabled after a successful restore if the suspend had been done in the 'shutdown' or 'reboot' mode. In principle we could (and probably should) unconditionally disable the GPEs before each snapshot creation *and* before the restore, but then we'd have to unconditionally enable them after the snapshot creation as well as after the restore (or restore failure)   Still, for this purpose we'd need to modify acpi_enter_sleep_state_prep() and acpi_leave_sleep_state() and we'd have to introduce some mechanism synchronizing the disablind/enabling of the GPEs with the device drivers' .suspend()/.resume() routines and with disable_/enable_nonboot_cpus().  However, this would have affected the suspend (ie. s2ram) code as well as the hibernation, which I'd like to avoid in this patch series. 2007-05-07swsusp: use rbtree for tracking allocated swapRafael J. Wysocki1-13/+5
Make swsusp use extents instead of a bitmap to trace swap pages allocated for saving the image (the tracking is only needed in case there's an error, so that the allocated swap pages can be released). This should allow us to reduce the memory usage, practically always, and improve performance. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2007-05-02[PATCH] x86-64: do not use virt_to_page on kernel data addressVivek Goyal1-15/+27
o virt_to_page() call should be used on kernel linear addresses and not on kernel text and data addresses. Swsusp code uses it on kernel data (statically allocated swsusp_header). o Allocate swsusp_header dynamically so that virt_to_page() can be used safely. o I am changing this because in next few patches, __pa() on x86_64 will no longer support kernel text and data addresses and hibernation breaks. 2007-01-05[PATCH] swsusp: Do not fail if resume device is not setRafael J. Wysocki1-4/+5
In the kernels later than 2.6.19 there is a regression that makes swsusp fail if the resume device is not explicitly specified. It can be fixed by adding an additional parameter to mm/swapfile.c:swap_type_of() allowing us to pass the (struct block_device *) corresponding to the first available swap back to the caller. 2006-12-07[PATCH] swsusp: use __GFP_WAITRafael J. Wysocki1-3/+3

2006-12-07[PATCH] swsusp: Improve handling of highmemRafael J. Wysocki1-1/+1
Currently swsusp saves the contents of highmem pages by copying them to the normal zone which is quite inefficient (eg. it requires two normal pages to be used for saving one highmem page). This may be improved by using highmem for saving the contents of saveable highmem pages. Namely, during the suspend phase of the suspend-resume cycle we try to allocate as many free highmem pages as there are saveable highmem pages. If there are not enough highmem image pages to store the contents of all of the saveable highmem pages, some of them will be stored in the "normal" memory. Next, we allocate as many free "normal" pages as needed to store the (remaining) image data. We use a memory bitmap to mark the allocated free pages (ie. highmem as well as "normal" image pages). Now, we use another memory bitmap to mark all of the saveable pages (highmem as well as "normal") and the contents of the saveable pages are copied into the image pages. Then, the second bitmap is used to save the pfns corresponding to the saveable pages and the first one is used to save their data. During the resume phase the pfns of the pages that were saveable during the suspend are loaded from the image and used to mark the "unsafe" page frames. Next, we try to allocate as many free highmem page frames as to load all of the image data that had been in the highmem before the suspend and we allocate so many free "normal" page frames that the total number of allocated free pages (highmem and "normal") is equal to the size of the image. While doing this we have to make sure that there will be some extra free "normal" and "safe" page frames for two lists of PBEs constructed later. Now, the image data are loaded, if possible, into their "original" page frames. The image data that cannot be written into their "original" page frames are loaded into "safe" page frames and their "original" kernel virtual addresses, as well as the addresses of the "safe" pages containing their copies, are stored in one of two lists of PBEs. One list of PBEs is for the copies of "normal" suspend pages (ie. "normal" pages that were saveable during the suspend) and it is used in the same way as previously (ie. by the architecture-dependent parts of swsusp). The other list of PBEs is for the copies of highmem suspend pages. The pages in this list are restored (in a reversible way) right before the arch-dependent code is called. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. 2006-12-07[PATCH] swsusp: add resume_offset command line parameterRafael J. Wysocki1-5/+10
Add the kernel command line parameter "resume_offset=" allowing us to specify the offset, in <PAGE_SIZE> units, from the beginning of the partition pointed to by the "resume=" parameter at which the swap header is located. This offset can be determined, for example, by an application using the FIBMAP ioctl to obtain the swap header's block number for given file.
