2022-10-07xen/pcifront: move xenstore config scanning into sub-functionJuergen Gross1-106/+37
pcifront_try_connect() and pcifront_attach_devices() share a large chunk of duplicated code for reading the config information from Xenstore, which only differs regarding calling pcifront_rescan_root() or pcifront_scan_root(). Put that code into a new sub-function. It is fine to always call pcifront_rescan_root() from that common function, as it will fallback to pcifront_scan_root() if the domain/bus combination isn't known yet (and pcifront_scan_root() should never be called for an already known domain/bus combination anyway). In order to avoid duplicate messages for the fallback case move the check for domain/bus not known to the beginning of pcifront_rescan_root(). While at it fix the error reporting in case the root-xx node had the wrong format. As the return value of pcifront_try_connect() and pcifront_attach_devices() are not used anywhere make those functions return void. As an additional bonus this removes the dubious return of -EFAULT in case of an unexpected driver state. 2022-10-04xen-pcifront: Handle missed Connected stateJason Andryuk1-2/+16
An HVM guest with linux stubdomain and 2 PCI devices failed to start as libxl timed out waiting for the PCI devices to be added. It happens intermittently but with some regularity. libxl wrote the two xenstore entries for the devices, but then timed out waiting for backend state 4 (Connected) - the state stayed at 7 (Reconfiguring). (PCI passthrough to an HVM with stubdomain is PV passthrough to the stubdomain and then HVM passthrough with the QEMU inside the stubdomain.) The stubdomain kernel never printed "pcifront pci-0: Installing PCI frontend", so it seems to have missed state 4 which would have called pcifront_try_connect() -> pcifront_connect_and_init_dma() Have pcifront_detach_devices() special-case state Initialised and call pcifront_connect_and_init_dma(). Don't use pcifront_try_connect() because that sets the xenbus state which may throw off the backend. After connecting, skip the remainder of detach_devices since none have been initialized yet. When the backend switches to Reconfigured, pcifront_attach_devices() will pick them up again. Struct pci_driver contains a struct device_driver, so for PCI devices, it's easy to convert a device_driver * to a pci_driver * with to_pci_driver(). The device_driver * is in struct device, so we don't need to also keep track of the pci_driver * in struct pci_dev. Replace pdev->driver with to_pci_driver(). This is a step toward removing pci_dev->driver. An unnecessary "__ref" annotation was removed from the "drivers/pci/xen_pcifront.c" file. The function where the annotation was used was "pcifront_backend_changed()", which does not call any functions annotated as "__*init" nor "__*exit". This makes "__ref" unnecessary since this annotation is used to make the compiler ignore section miss-matches when they are not happening here in the first place. In addition to the aforementioned change, some code style issues were fixed in the same file. 2021-03-10Xen/gnttab: introduce common INVALID_GRANT_{HANDLE,REF}Jan Beulich1-2/+2
It's not helpful if every driver has to cook its own. Generalize xenbus'es INVALID_GRANT_HANDLE and pcifront's INVALID_GRANT_REF (which shouldn't have expanded to zero to begin with). Use the constants in p2m.c and gntdev.c right away, and update field types where necessary so they would match with the constants' types (albeit without touching struct ioctl_gntdev_grant_ref's ref field, as that's part of the public interface of the kernel and would require introducing a dependency on Xen's grant_table.h public header). Split out all the bits that are purely for dma_map_ops implementations and related code into a new <linux/dma-map-ops.h> header so that they don't get pulled into all the drivers. That also means the architecture specific <asm/dma-mapping.h> is not pulled in by <linux/dma-mapping.h> any more, which leads to a missing includes that were pulled in by the x86 or arm versions in a few not overly portable drivers. pci_get_bus_and_slot() is restrictive such that it assumes domain=0 as where a PCI device is present. This restricts the device drivers to be reused for other domain numbers. Use pci_get_domain_bus_and_slot() with a domain number of 0 where we can't extract the domain number. Other places, use the actual domain number from the device. This patch fixes the issue by: 1) Use kzalloc to initialize to a well known state. 2) Put 'struct pci_sysdata' at the start of 'pcifront_sd'. That way access to the 'node' will access the right offset. struct timeval uses a 32-bit field for representing seconds, which will overflow in the year 2038 and beyond. Replace struct timeval with 64-bit ktime_t which is 2038 safe. This is part of a larger effort to remove instances of 32-bit timekeeping variables (timeval, time_t and timespec) from the kernel. Originally Xen PV drivers only use single-page ring to pass along information. This might limit the throughput between frontend and backend. The patch extends Xenbus driver to support multi-page ring, which in general should improve throughput if ring is the bottleneck. Changes to various frontend / backend to adapt to the new interface are also included. This lets us be able to handle more events, have lower latency, and better scalability. Good stuff. The other is PVH by Mukesh Rathor. In short, PV is a mode where the kernel lets the hypervisor program page-tables, segments, etc. With EPT/NPT capabilities in current processors, the overhead of doing this in an HVM (Hardware Virtual Machine) container is much lower than the hypervisor doing it for us. In short we let a PV guest run without doing page-table, segment, syscall, etc updates through the hypervisor - instead it is all done within the guest container. It is a "hybrid" PV - hence the 'PVH' name - a PV guest within an HVM container. The major benefits are less code to deal with - for example we only use one function from the the pv_mmu_ops (which has 39 function calls); faster performance for syscall (no context switches into the hypervisor); less traps on various operations; etc. It is still being baked - the ABI is not yet set in stone. But it is pretty awesome and we are excited about it. Lastly, there are some changes to ARM code - you should get a simple conflict which has been resolved in #linux-next. 2013-06-14xen/pcifront: Deal with toolstack missing 'XenbusStateClosing' state.Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk1-4/+3
There are two tool-stack that can instruct the Xen PCI frontend and backend to change states: 'xm' (Python code with a daemon), and 'xl' (C library - does not keep state changes). With the 'xm', the path to disconnect a single PCI device (xm pci-detach <guest> <BDF>) is: 4(Connected)->7(Reconfiguring*)-> 8(Reconfigured)-> 4(Connected)->5(Closing*). The * is for states that the tool-stack sets. For 'xl', it is similar: 4(Connected)->7(Reconfiguring*)-> 8(Reconfigured)-> 4(Connected) Both of them also tear down the XenBus structure, so the backend state ends up going in the 3(Initialised) and calls pcifront_xenbus_remove. When a PCI device is plugged back in (xm pci-attach <guest> <BDF>) both of them follow the same pattern: 2(InitWait*), 3(Initialized*), 4(Connected*)->4(Connected). [xen-pcifront ignores the 2,3 state changes and only acts when 4 (Connected) has been reached] Note that this is for a _single_ PCI device. If there were two PCI devices and only one was disconnected 'xm' would show the same state changes. The problem is that git commit 3d925320e9e2de162bd138bf97816bda8c3f71be ("xen/pcifront: Use Xen-SWIOTLB when initting if required") introduced a mechanism to initialize the SWIOTLB when the Xen PCI front moves to Connected state. It also had some aggressive seatbelt code check that would warn the user if one tried to change to Connected state without hitting first the Closing state: pcifront pci-0: PCI frontend already installed! However, that code can be relaxed and we can continue on working even if the frontend is instructed to be the 'Connected' state with no devices and then gets tickled to be in 'Connected' state again. In other words, this 4(Connected)->5(Closing)->4(Connected) state was expected, while 4(Connected)->.... anything but 5(Closing)->4(Connected) was not. This patch removes that aggressive check and allows Xen pcifront to work with the 'xl' toolstack (for one or more PCI devices) and with 'xm' toolstack (for more than two PCI devices).
