2012-04-16x86/platform: Remove incorrect error message in x86_default_fixup_cpu_id()Andreas Herrmann1-1/+0
It's only called from amd.c:srat_detect_node(). The introduced condition for calling the fixup code is true for all AMD multi-node processors, e.g. Magny-Cours and Interlagos. There we have 2 NUMA nodes on one socket. Thus there are cores having different numa-node-id but with equal phys_proc_id. There is no point to print error messages in such a situation. The confusing/misleading error message was introduced with commit 64be4c1c2428e148de6081af235e2418e6a66dda ("x86: Add x86_init platform override to fix up NUMA core numbering"). Remove the default fixup function (especially the error message) and replace it by a NULL pointer check, move the Numascale-specific condition for calling the fixup into the fixup-function itself and slightly adapt the comment. 2012-03-20x86: kvmclock: abstract save/restore sched_clock_stateMarcelo Tosatti1-1/+3
Upon resume from hibernation, CPU 0's hvclock area contains the old values for system_time and tsc_timestamp. It is necessary for the hypervisor to update these values with uptodate ones before the CPU uses them. Abstract TSC's save/restore sched_clock_state functions and use restore_state to write to KVM_SYSTEM_TIME MSR, forcing an update. Also move restore_sched_clock_state before __restore_processor_state, since the later calls CONFIG_LOCK_STAT's lockstat_clock (also for TSC). Thanks to Igor Mammedov for tracking it down. 2012-03-05x86: Introduce x86_cpuinit.early_percpu_clock_init hookIgor Mammedov1-0/+1
When kvm guest uses kvmclock, it may hang on vcpu hot-plug. This is caused by an overflow in pvclock_get_nsec_offset, u64 delta = tsc - shadow->tsc_timestamp; which in turn is caused by an undefined values from percpu hv_clock that hasn't been initialized yet. Uninitialized clock on being booted cpu is accessed from start_secondary -> smp_callin -> smp_store_cpu_info -> identify_secondary_cpu -> mtrr_ap_init -> mtrr_restore -> stop_machine_from_inactive_cpu -> queue_stop_cpus_work ... -> sched_clock -> kvm_clock_read which is well before x86_cpuinit.setup_percpu_clockev call in start_secondary, where percpu clock is initialized. This patch introduces a hook that allows to setup/initialize per_cpu clock early and avoid overflow due to reading - undefined values - old values if cpu was offlined and then onlined again Another possible early user of this clock source is ftrace that accesses it to get timestamps for ring buffer entries. So if mtrr_ap_init is moved from identify_secondary_cpu to past x86_cpuinit.setup_percpu_clockev in start_secondary, ftrace may cause the same overflow/hang on cpu hot-plug anyway. More complete description of the problem: https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/2/2/101 Credits to Marcelo Tosatti <mtosatti@redhat.com> for hook idea. 2011-11-10x86/mrst: Avoid reporting wrong nmi statusJacob Pan1-0/+2
Moorestown/Medfield platform does not have port 0x61 to report NMI status, nor does it have external NMI sources. The only NMI sources are from lapic, as results of perf counter overflow or IPI, e.g. NMI watchdog or spin lock debug. Reading port 0x61 on Moorestown will return 0xff which misled NMI handlers to false critical errors such memory parity error. The subsequent ioport access for NMI handling can also cause undefined behavior on Moorestown. This patch allows kernel process NMI due to watchdog or backrace dump without unnecessary hangs. 2011-05-12x86,xen: introduce x86_init.mapping.pagetable_reserveStefano Stabellini1-0/+4
Introduce a new x86_init hook called pagetable_reserve that at the end of init_memory_mapping is used to reserve a range of memory addresses for the kernel pagetable pages we used and free the other ones. On native it just calls memblock_x86_reserve_range while on xen it also takes care of setting the spare memory previously allocated for kernel pagetable pages from RO to RW, so that it can be used for other purposes. A detailed explanation of the reason why this hook is needed follows. As a consequence of the commit: commit 4b239f458c229de044d6905c2b0f9fe16ed9e01e Author: Yinghai Lu <yinghai@kernel.org> Date: Fri Dec 17 16:58:28 2010 -0800 x86-64, mm: Put early page table high at some point init_memory_mapping is going to reach the pagetable pages area and map those pages too (mapping them as normal memory that falls in the range of addresses passed to init_memory_mapping as argument). Some of those pages are already pagetable pages (they are in the range pgt_buf_start-pgt_buf_end) therefore they are going to be mapped RO and everything is fine. Some of these pages are not pagetable pages yet (they fall in the range pgt_buf_end-pgt_buf_top; for example the page at pgt_buf_end) so they are going to be mapped RW. When these pages become pagetable pages and are hooked into the pagetable, xen will find that the guest has already a RW mapping of them somewhere and fail the operation. The reason Xen requires pagetables to be RO is that the hypervisor needs to verify that the pagetables are valid before using them. The validation operations are called "pinning" (more details in arch/x86/xen/mmu.c). In order to fix the issue we mark all the pages in the entire range pgt_buf_start-pgt_buf_top as RO, however when the pagetable allocation is completed only the range pgt_buf_start-pgt_buf_end is reserved by init_memory_mapping. Hence the kernel is going to crash as soon as one of the pages in the range pgt_buf_end-pgt_buf_top is reused (b/c those ranges are RO). For this reason we need a hook to reserve the kernel pagetable pages we used and free the other ones so that they can be reused for other purposes. On native it just means calling memblock_x86_reserve_range, on Xen it also means marking RW the pagetable pages that we allocated before but that haven't been used before. Another way to fix this is without using the hook is by adding a 'if (xen_pv_domain)' in the 'init_memory_mapping' code and calling the Xen counterpart, but that is just nasty. 2010-07-07x86: Add i8042 pre-detection hook to x86_platform_opsFeng Tang1-1/+3
Some x86 platforms like Intel MID platforms don't have i8042 controllers, and i8042 driver's probe to some legacy IO ports may hang the MID processor. With this hook, i8042 driver can runtime check and skip the probe when the pretection fail which also saves some probe time [ hpa note: this is currently a compile-time check, which breaks the i386 allyesconfig build. 2010-02-19x86: Add pci_init_irq to x86_initThomas Gleixner1-0/+1
Moorestown wants to reuse pcibios_init_irq but needs to provide its own implementation of pci_enable_irq. After we distangled the init we can move the init_irq call to x86_init and remove the pci_enable_irq != NULL check in pcibios_init_irq. pci_enable_irq is compile time initialized to pirq_enable_irq and the special cases which override it (visws and acpi) set the x86_init function pointer to noop. 2010-02-19x86: Move pci init function to x86_initThomas Gleixner1-0/+5
The PCI initialization in pci_subsys_init() is a mess. pci_numaq_init, pci_acpi_init, pci_visws_init and pci_legacy_init are called and each implementation checks and eventually modifies the global variable pcibios_scanned. x86_init functions allow us to do this more elegant. The pci.init function pointer is preset to pci_legacy_init. numaq, acpi and visws can modify the pointer in their early setup functions. The functions return 0 when they did the full initialization including bus scan. A non zero return value indicates that pci_legacy_init needs to be called either because the selected function failed or wants the generic bus scan in pci_legacy_init to happen (e.g. visws). This allows us to add a case for MRST and let MRST have its own early setup function. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-31x86: Move tsc_calibration to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+5
TSC calibration is modified by the vmware hypervisor and paravirt by separate means. Moorestown wants to add its own calibration routine as well. So make calibrate_tsc a proper x86_init_ops function and override it by paravirt or by the early setup of the vmware hypervisor. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-31x86: Add timer_init to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+3
The timer init code is convoluted with several quirks and the paravirt timer chooser. Figuring out which code path is actually taken is not for the faint hearted. Move the numaq TSC quirk to tsc_pre_init x86_init_ops function and replace the paravirt time chooser and the remaining x86 quirk with a simple x86_init_ops function. 2009-08-31x86: Move percpu clockevents setup to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+9
paravirt overrides the setup of the default apic timers as per cpu timers. Moorestown needs to override that as well. Move it to x86_init_ops setup and create a separate x86_cpuinit struct which holds the function for the secondary evtl. hotplugabble CPUs. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-31x86: Move paravirt pagetable_setup to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+6
Replace more paravirt hackery by proper x86_init_ops. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-31x86: Move paravirt banner printout to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+2
Replace another obscure paravirt magic and move it to x86_init_ops. Such a hook is also useful for embedded and special hardware. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-31x86: Replace ARCH_SETUP by a proper x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+4
ARCH_SETUP is a horrible leftover from the old arch/i386 mach support code. It still has a lonely user in xen. Move it to x86_init_ops. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-31x86: Move traps_init to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+1
Replace the quirks by a simple x86_init_ops function. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-31x86: Move irq_init to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+1
irq_init is overridden by x86_quirks and by paravirts. Unify the whole mess and make it an unconditional x86_init_ops function which defaults to the standard function and can be overridden by the early platform code. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-31x86: Move pre_intr_init to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+5
Replace the quirk machinery by a x86_init_ops function which defaults to the standard implementation. This is also a preparatory patch for Moorestown support which needs to replace the default init_ISA_irqs as well. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-31x86: Move get/find_smp_config to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+2
Replace the quirk machinery by a x86_init_ops function which defaults to the standard implementation. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>

2009-08-27x86: Move smp_read_mpc_oem to x86_init_ops.Thomas Gleixner1-0/+1
Move smp_read_mpc_oem from quirks to x86_init. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-27x86: Move mpc_apic_id to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+2
The mpc_apic_id setup is handled by a x86_quirk. Make it a x86_init_ops function with a default implementation. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-27x86: Move ioapic_ids_setup to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+1
32bit and also the numaq code have special requirements on the ioapic_id setup. Convert it to a x86_init_ops function and get rid of the quirks and #ifdefs Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-27x86: Sanitize smp_record and move it to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+5
The x86 quirkification introduced an extra ugly hackery with a variable pointer in the mpparse code. If the pointer is initialized then it is dereferenced and the variable set to 0 or incremented. Create a x86_init_ops function and let the affected numaq code hold the function. Default init is a setup noop. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-27x86: Move memory_setup to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+2
memory_setup is overridden by x86_quirks and by paravirts with weak functions and quirks. Unify the whole mess and make it an unconditional x86_init_ops function which defaults to the standard function and can be overridden by the early platform code. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-27x86: Add reserve_ebda_region to x86_init_opsThomas Gleixner1-0/+2
reserve_ebda_region needs to be called befor start_kernel. Moorestown needs to override it. Make it a x86_init_ops function and initialize it with the default reserve_ebda_region. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-27x86: Add request_standard_resources to x86_initThomas Gleixner1-1/+2
The 32bit and the 64bit code are slighty different in the reservation of standard resources. Also the upcoming Moorestown support needs its own version of that. Add it to x86_init_ops and initialize it with the 64bit default. 32bit overrides it in early boot. Now moorestown can add it's own override w/o sprinkling the code with more #ifdefs Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-27x86: Add probe_roms to x86_initThomas Gleixner1-0/+4
probe_roms is only used on 32bit. Add it to the x86_init ops and remove the #ifdefs. Default initializer is x86_init_noop() which is overridden in the 32bit boot code. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
2009-08-27x86: Add x86_init infrastructureThomas Gleixner1-0/+17
The upcoming Moorestown support brings the embedded world to x86. The setup code of x86 has already a couple of hooks which are either x86_quirks or paravirt ops. Some of those setup hooks are pretty convoluted like the timer setup and the tsc calibration code. But there are other places which could do with a cleanup. Instead of having inline functions/macros which are modified at compile time I decided to introduce x86_init ops which are unconditional in the code and make it clear that they can be changed either during compile time or in the early boot process. The function pointers are initialized by default functions which can be noops so that the pointer can be called unconditionally in the most cases. This also allows us to remove 32bit/64bit, paravirt and other #ifdeffery. paravirt guests are just a hardware platform in the setup code, so we should treat them as such and not hide all behind multiple layers of indirection and compile time dependencies. It's more obvious that x86_init.timers.timer_init() is a function pointer than the late_time_init = choose_time_init() obscurity. It's also way simpler to grep for x86_init.timers.timer_init and find all the places which modify that function pointer instead of analyzing weak functions, macros and paravirt indirections. Note. This is not a general paravirt_ops replacement. It just will move setup related hooks which are potentially useful for other platform setup purposes as well out of the paravirt domain. Add the base infrastructure without any functionality. Signed-off-by: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de>
