2019-07-12nios2: switch to generic version of pte allocationMike Rapoport1-35/+2
nios2 allocates kernel PTE pages with __get_free_pages(GFP_KERNEL | __GFP_ZERO, PTE_ORDER); and user page tables with pte = alloc_pages(GFP_KERNEL, PTE_ORDER); if (pte) clear_highpage(); The PTE_ORDER is hardwired to zero, which makes nios2 implementation almost identical to the generic one. Switch nios2 to the generic version that does exactly the same thing for the kernel page tables and adds __GFP_ACCOUNT for the user PTEs. The pte_free_kernel() and pte_free() versions on nios2 are identical to the generic ones and can be simply dropped. The force_sig function is built for delivering synchronous signals such as SIGSEGV where the userspace application caused a synchronous fault (such as a page fault) and the kernel responded with a signal. Because the name force_sig does not make this clear, and because the force_sig takes a task parameter the function force_sig has been abused for sending other kinds of signals over the years. Slowly those have been fixed when the oopses have been tracked down. Remove the CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER_PATH because: 1. It is disabled since commit 1be01d4a5714 ("driver: base: Disable CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER by default") as its dependency (UEVENT_HELPER) was made default to 'n', 2. It is not recommended (help message: "This should not be used today [...] creates a high system load") and was kept only for ancient userland, 3. Certain userland specifically requests it to be disabled (systemd README: "Legacy hotplug slows down the system and confuses udev"). Strangely enough, NIOS2 defines TRACE_IRQFLAGS_SUPPORT twice with different values, which is pointless and confusing. [1] arch/nios2/Kconfig config TRACE_IRQFLAGS_SUPPORT def_bool n [2] arch/nios2/Kconfig.debug config TRACE_IRQFLAGS_SUPPORT def_bool y [1] is included before [2]. In the Kconfig syntax, the first one is effective. So, TRACE_IRQFLAGS_SUPPORT is always 'n'. The second define in arch/nios2/Kconfig.debug is dead code. As synchronous exceptions really only make sense against the current task (otherwise how are you synchronous) remove the task parameter from from force_sig_fault to make it explicit that is what is going on. The two known exceptions that deliver a synchronous exception to a stopped ptraced task have already been changed to force_sig_fault_to_task. Most architectures do not need the memblock memory after the page allocator is initialized, but only few enable ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK in the arch Kconfig. Replacing ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK with ARCH_KEEP_MEMBLOCK and inverting the logic makes it clear which architectures actually use memblock after system initialization and skips the necessity to add ARCH_DISCARD_MEMBLOCK to the architectures that are still missing that option. Patch series "provide a generic free_initmem implementation", v2. Many architectures implement free_initmem() in exactly the same or very similar way: they wrap the call to free_initmem_default() with sometimes different 'poison' parameter. These patches switch those architectures to use a generic implementation that does free_initmem_default(POISON_FREE_INITMEM). At Linux Plumbers, Andy Lutomirski approached me and pointed out that the function call syscall_get_arguments() implemented in x86 was horribly written and not optimized for the standard case of passing in 0 and 6 for the starting index and the number of system calls to get. When looking at all the users of this function, I discovered that all instances pass in only 0 and 6 for these arguments. Instead of having this function handle different cases that are never used, simply rewrite it to return the first 6 arguments of a system call. This should help out the performance of tracing system calls by ptrace, ftrace and perf. 2019-04-03locking/rwsem: Remove rwsem-spinlock.c & use rwsem-xadd.c for all archsWaiman Long1-3/+0
Currently, we have two different implementation of rwsem: 1) CONFIG_RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK (rwsem-spinlock.c) 2) CONFIG_RWSEM_XCHGADD_ALGORITHM (rwsem-xadd.c) As we are going to use a single generic implementation for rwsem-xadd.c and no architecture-specific code will be needed, there is no point in keeping two different implementations of rwsem. In most cases, the performance of rwsem-spinlock.c will be worse. It also doesn't get all the performance tuning and optimizations that had been implemented in rwsem-xadd.c over the years. For simplication, we are going to remove rwsem-spinlock.c and make all architectures use a single implementation of rwsem - rwsem-xadd.c. All references to RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK and RWSEM_XCHGADD_ALGORITHM in the code are removed. For the architectures that do not implement their own tlb_flush() but do already use the generic mmu_gather, there are two options: 1) the platform has an efficient flush_tlb_range() and asm-generic/tlb.h doesn't need any overrides at all. 2) the platform lacks an efficient flush_tlb_range() and we select MMU_GATHER_NO_RANGE to minimize full invalidates. Convert all 'simple' architectures to one of these two forms. alpha: has no range invalidate -> 2 arc: already used flush_tlb_range() -> 1 c6x: has no range invalidate -> 2 hexagon: has an efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1 (flush_tlb_mm() is in fact a full range invalidate, so no need to shoot down everything) m68k: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 microblaze: has no flush_tlb_range() -> 2 mips: has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1 (even though it currently seems to use flush_tlb_mm()) nds32: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1 nios2: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 (no limit on range iteration) openrisc: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 (no limit on range iteration) parisc: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1 sparc32: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1 unicore32: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2 (no limit on range iteration) xtensa: has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1 Note this also fixes a bug in the existing code for a number platforms. Those platforms that did: tlb_end_vma() -> if (!full_mm) flush_tlb_*() tlb_flush -> if (full_mm) flush_tlb_mm() missed the case of shift_arg_pages(), which doesn't have @fullmm set, nor calls into tlb_*vma(), but still frees page-tables and thus needs an invalidate. The new code handles this by detecting a non-empty range, and either issuing the matching range invalidate or a full invalidate, depending on the capabilities. No change in behavior intended. This patch makes tlb_start_vma() default to flush_cache_range(), which should be right and sufficient. The only exceptions that I found where (oddly): - m68k-mmu - sparc64 - unicore Those architectures appear to have flush_cache_range(), but their current tlb_start_vma() does not call it. At least, [2] is half-baked. Nor do arch maintainers look like they care about this. For example, commit 0add53713b1c ("microblaze: Add missing kvm_para.h to Kbuild") exported <asm/kvm_para.h> to user-space in order to fix an in-kernel build error. We have two ways to make this consistent: [A] export both <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h> for all architectures, irrespective of the KVM support [B] Match the header export of <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h> to the KVM support My first attempt was [A] because the code looks cleaner, but Paolo suggested [B]. Factor out the duplicated include directives to scripts/Makefile.asm-generic so that no architecture would opt out of the mandatory-y mechanism. um is not forced to include mandatory-y since it is a very exceptional case which does not support UAPI. There is no need for complicated calculation for an invalid address that maps to the same TLB index as the entry to be invalidated. Using the TLB address plus the two top bits set puts the address into the kernel TLB bypass range and still maps to the same cache line. This is also a bug fix for flush_tlb_pid, which is currently unused, but does not set PTEADDR to invalid. 2019-03-07nios2: flush_tlb_page use PID based flushNicholas Piggin3-14/+19
flush_tlb_page is for flushing user pages, so it should not be using flush_tlb_one (which flushes all pages). This patch implements it with the flush_tlb_range, which is a user flush that does the right thing. flush_tlb_one is made static to mm/tlb.c because it's a bit confusing. It is used in do_page_fault to flush the kernel non-linear mappings, so that is replaced with flush_tlb_kernel_page. The end result is that functionality is identical.
