2016-07-26dax: remote unused fault wrappersRoss Zwisler1-2/+2
Remove the unused wrappers dax_fault() and dax_pmd_fault(). After this removal, rename __dax_fault() and __dax_pmd_fault() to dax_fault() and dax_pmd_fault() respectively, and update all callers. The dax_fault() and dax_pmd_fault() wrappers were initially intended to capture some filesystem independent functionality around page faults (calling sb_start_pagefault() & sb_end_pagefault(), updating file mtime and ctime). However, the following commits: 5726b27b09cc ("ext2: Add locking for DAX faults") ea3d7209ca01 ("ext4: fix races between page faults and hole punching") added locking to the ext2 and ext4 filesystems after these common operations but before __dax_fault() and __dax_pmd_fault() were called. This means that these wrappers are no longer used, and are unlikely to be used in the future. XFS has had locking analogous to what was recently added to ext2 and ext4 since DAX support was initially introduced by: 6b698edeeef0 ("xfs: add DAX file operations support") Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20160714214049.20075-2-ross.zwisler@linux.intel.com Signed-off-by: Ross Zwisler <ross.zwisler@linux.intel.com> Cc: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu> Cc: Alexander Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Cc: Andreas Dilger <adilger.kernel@dilger.ca> Cc: Dan Williams <dan.j.williams@intel.com> Cc: Dave Chinner <david@fromorbit.com> Reviewed-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Cc: Jonathan Corbet <corbet@lwn.net> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2016-07-05ext2: fix filesystem deadlock while reading corrupted xattr blockCarlos Maiolino4-0/+43
This bug can be reproducible with fsfuzzer, although, I couldn't reproduce it 100% of my tries, it is quite easily reproducible. During the deletion of an inode, ext2_xattr_delete_inode() does not check if the block pointed by EXT2_I(inode)->i_file_acl is a valid data block, this might lead to a deadlock, when i_file_acl == 1, and the filesystem block size is 1024. In that situation, ext2_xattr_delete_inode, will load the superblock's buffer head (instead of a valid i_file_acl block), and then lock that buffer head, which, ext2_sync_super will also try to lock, making the filesystem deadlock in the following stack trace: root 17180 0.0 0.0 113660 660 pts/0 D+ 07:08 0:00 rmdir /media/test/dir1 [<ffffffff8125da9f>] __sync_dirty_buffer+0xaf/0x100 [<ffffffff8125db03>] sync_dirty_buffer+0x13/0x20 [<ffffffffa03f0d57>] ext2_sync_super+0xb7/0xc0 [ext2] [<ffffffffa03f10b9>] ext2_error+0x119/0x130 [ext2] [<ffffffffa03e9d93>] ext2_free_blocks+0x83/0x350 [ext2] [<ffffffffa03f3d03>] ext2_xattr_delete_inode+0x173/0x190 [ext2] [<ffffffffa03ee9e9>] ext2_evict_inode+0xc9/0x130 [ext2] [<ffffffff8123fd23>] evict+0xb3/0x180 [<ffffffff81240008>] iput+0x1b8/0x240 [<ffffffff8123c4ac>] d_delete+0x11c/0x150 [<ffffffff8122fa7e>] vfs_rmdir+0xfe/0x120 [<ffffffff812340ee>] do_rmdir+0x17e/0x1f0 [<ffffffff81234dd6>] SyS_rmdir+0x16/0x20 [<ffffffff81838cf2>] entry_SYSCALL_64_fastpath+0x1a/0xa4 [<ffffffffffffffff>] 0xffffffffffffffff Fix this by using the same approach ext4 uses to test data blocks validity, implementing ext2_data_block_valid. An another possibility when the superblock is very corrupted, is that i_file_acl is 1, block_count is 1 and first_data_block is 0. For such situations, we might have i_file_acl pointing to a 'valid' block, but still step over the superblock. The approach I used was to also test if the superblock is not in the range described by ext2_data_block_valid() arguments Signed-off-by: Carlos Maiolino <cmaiolino@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>

2016-05-17ext2: Avoid DAX zeroing to corrupt dataJan Kara1-2/+2
Currently ext2 zeroes any data blocks allocated for DAX inode however it still returns them as BH_New. Thus DAX code zeroes them again in dax_insert_mapping() which can possibly overwrite the data that has been already stored to those blocks by a racing dax_io(). Avoid marking pre-zeroed buffers as new. Reviewed-by: Ross Zwisler <ross.zwisler@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Vishal Verma <vishal.l.verma@intel.com>
2016-05-17ext2: Fix block zeroing in ext2_get_blocks() for DAXJan Kara1-1/+1
When zeroing allocated blocks for DAX, we accidentally zeroed only the first allocated block instead of all of them. So far this problem is hidden by the fact that page faults always need only a single block and DAX write code zeroes blocks again. But the zeroing in DAX code is racy and needs to be removed so fix the zeroing in ext2 to zero all allocated blocks. Right now ext2_get_page() (and its analogues in a bunch of other filesystems) relies upon the directory being locked - the way it sets and tests Checked and Error bits would be racy without that. Switch to a slightly different scheme, _not_ setting Checked in case of failure. That way the logics becomes if Checked => OK else if Error => fail else if !validate => fail else => OK with validation setting Checked or Error on success and failure resp. and returning which one had happened. 2016-04-04mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov2-19/+19
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2016-03-31posix_acl: Inode acl caching fixesAndreas Gruenbacher1-3/+0
When get_acl() is called for an inode whose ACL is not cached yet, the get_acl inode operation is called to fetch the ACL from the filesystem. The inode operation is responsible for updating the cached acl with set_cached_acl(). This is done without locking at the VFS level, so another task can call set_cached_acl() or forget_cached_acl() before the get_acl inode operation gets to calling set_cached_acl(), and then get_acl's call to set_cached_acl() results in caching an outdate ACL. Prevent this from happening by setting the cached ACL pointer to a task-specific sentinel value before calling the get_acl inode operation. Move the responsibility for updating the cached ACL from the get_acl inode operations to get_acl(). There, only set the cached ACL if the sentinel value hasn't changed. The sentinel values are chosen to have odd values. Likewise, the value of ACL_NOT_CACHED is odd. In contrast, ACL object pointers always have an even value (ACLs are aligned in memory). This allows to distinguish uncached ACLs values from ACL objects. In addition, switch from guarding inode->i_acl and inode->i_default_acl upates by the inode->i_lock spinlock to using xchg() and cmpxchg(). Filesystems that do not want ACLs returned from their get_acl inode operations to be cached must call forget_cached_acl() to prevent the VFS from doing so. 2016-02-27ext2, ext4: fix issue with missing journal entry in ext4_dax_mkwrite()Ross Zwisler1-18/+1
As it is currently written ext4_dax_mkwrite() assumes that the call into __dax_mkwrite() will not have to do a block allocation so it doesn't create a journal entry. For a read that creates a zero page to cover a hole followed by a write that actually allocates storage this is incorrect. The ext4_dax_mkwrite() -> __dax_mkwrite() -> __dax_fault() path calls get_blocks() to allocate storage. Fix this by having the ->page_mkwrite fault handler call ext4_dax_fault() as this function already has all the logic needed to allocate a journal entry and call __dax_fault(). Also update the ext2 fault handlers in this same way to remove duplicate code and keep the logic between ext2 and ext4 the same. 2016-02-27dax: move writeback calls into the filesystemsRoss Zwisler1-0/+8
Previously calls to dax_writeback_mapping_range() for all DAX filesystems (ext2, ext4 & xfs) were centralized in filemap_write_and_wait_range(). dax_writeback_mapping_range() needs a struct block_device, and it used to get that from inode->i_sb->s_bdev. This is correct for normal inodes mounted on ext2, ext4 and XFS filesystems, but is incorrect for DAX raw block devices and for XFS real-time files. Instead, call dax_writeback_mapping_range() directly from the filesystem ->writepages function so that it can supply us with a valid block device. This also fixes DAX code to properly flush caches in response to sync(2). 2016-02-27dax: give DAX clearing code correct bdevRoss Zwisler1-2/+4
dax_clear_blocks() needs a valid struct block_device and previously it was using inode->i_sb->s_bdev in all cases. This is correct for normal inodes on mounted ext2, ext4 and XFS filesystems, but is incorrect for DAX raw block devices and for XFS real-time devices. Instead, rename dax_clear_blocks() to dax_clear_sectors(), and change its arguments to take a bdev and a sector instead of an inode and a block. This better reflects what the function does, and it allows the filesystem and raw block device code to pass in an appropriate struct block_device. 2016-02-27ext2, ext4: only set S_DAX for regular inodesRoss Zwisler1-1/+1
When S_DAX is set on an inode we assume that if there are pages attached to the mapping (mapping->nrpages != 0), those pages are clean zero pages that were used to service reads from holes. Any dirty data associated with the inode should be in the form of DAX exceptional entries (mapping->nrexceptional) that is written back via dax_writeback_mapping_range(). With the current code, though, this isn't always true. For example, ext2 and ext4 directory inodes can have S_DAX set, but have their dirty data stored as dirty page cache entries. For these types of inodes, having S_DAX set doesn't really make sense since their I/O doesn't actually happen through the DAX code path. Instead, only allow S_DAX to be set for regular inodes for ext2 and ext4. This allows us to have strict DAX vs non-DAX paths in the writeback code. 2016-02-22mbcache: add reusable flag to cache entriesAndreas Gruenbacher1-1/+1
To reduce amount of damage caused by single bad block, we limit number of inodes sharing an xattr block to 1024. Thus there can be more xattr blocks with the same contents when there are lots of files with the same extended attributes. These xattr blocks naturally result in hash collisions and can form long hash chains and we unnecessarily check each such block only to find out we cannot use it because it is already shared by too many inodes. Add a reusable flag to cache entries which is cleared when a cache entry has reached its maximum refcount. Cache entries which are not marked reusable are skipped by mb_cache_entry_find_{first,next}. This significantly speeds up mbcache when there are many same xattr blocks. For example for xattr-bench with 5 values and each process handling 20000 files, the run for 64 processes is 25x faster with this patch. Even for 8 processes the speedup is almost 3x. We have also verified that for situations where there is only one xattr block of each kind, the patch doesn't have a measurable cost. 2016-02-22ext2: convert to mbcache2Jan Kara4-100/+92
The conversion is generally straightforward. We convert filesystem from a global cache to per-fs one. Similarly to ext4 the tricky part is that xattr block corresponding to found mbcache entry can get freed before we get buffer lock for that block. So we have to check whether the entry is still valid after getting the buffer lock. Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>

Mark those kmem allocations that are known to be easily triggered from userspace as __GFP_ACCOUNT/SLAB_ACCOUNT, which makes them accounted to memcg. For the list, see below: - threadinfo - task_struct - task_delay_info - pid - cred - mm_struct - vm_area_struct and vm_region (nommu) - anon_vma and anon_vma_chain - signal_struct - sighand_struct - fs_struct - files_struct - fdtable and fdtable->full_fds_bits - dentry and external_name - inode for all filesystems. This is the most tedious part, because most filesystems overwrite the alloc_inode method. The list is far from complete, so feel free to add more objects. Nevertheless, it should be close to "account everything" approach and keep most workloads within bounds. Malevolent users will be able to breach the limit, but this was possible even with the former "account everything" approach (simply because it did not account everything in fact). Similar to lookup_one_len(), but gets called without ->i_mutex and tries to avoid ever taking it. 2015-12-08replace ->follow_link() with new method that could stay in RCU modeAl Viro1-2/+2
new method: ->get_link(); replacement of ->follow_link(). The differences are: * inode and dentry are passed separately * might be called both in RCU and non-RCU mode; the former is indicated by passing it a NULL dentry. * when called that way it isn't allowed to block and should return ERR_PTR(-ECHILD) if it needs to be called in non-RCU mode. It's a flagday change - the old method is gone, all in-tree instances converted. Conversion isn't hard; said that, so far very few instances do not immediately bail out when called in RCU mode. 2015-11-13xattr handlers: Pass handler to operations instead of flagsAndreas Gruenbacher4-22/+30
The xattr_handler operations are currently all passed a file system specific flags value which the operations can use to disambiguate between different handlers; some file systems use that to distinguish the xattr namespace, for example. In some oprations, it would be useful to also have access to the handler prefix. To allow that, pass a pointer to the handler to operations instead of the flags value alone. 2015-10-19ext2: Add locking for DAX faultsRoss Zwisler4-4/+104
Add locking to ensure that DAX faults are isolated from ext2 operations that modify the data blocks allocation for an inode. This is intended to be analogous to the work being done in XFS by Dave Chinner: http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-fsdevel/msg90260.html Compared with XFS the ext2 case is greatly simplified by the fact that ext2 already allocates and zeros new blocks before they are returned as part of ext2_get_block(), so DAX doesn't need to worry about getting unmapped or unwritten buffer heads. This means that the only work we need to do in ext2 is to isolate the DAX faults from inode block allocation changes. I believe this just means that we need to isolate the DAX faults from truncate operations. The newly introduced dax_sem is intended to replicate the protection offered by i_mmaplock in XFS. In addition to truncate the i_mmaplock also protects XFS operations like hole punching, fallocate down, extent manipulation IOCTLS like xfs_ioc_space() and extent swapping. Truncate is the only one of these operations supported by ext2. Signed-off-by: Ross Zwisler <ross.zwisler@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.com>
