2006-12-08[PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells1-0/+8
This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. 2006-10-04[PARISC] PA7200 also supports prefetch for readKyle McMartin1-1/+1
It seems PA7200 processors also suppress traps on loads to %r0. This means we can prefetch for read on these cpus. Of course, we can't support prefetch for write, since that requires LOAD DOUBLEWORD which was added with PA2.0 Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org>

2006-04-21[PARISC] Further work for multiple page sizesHelge Deller1-0/+31
More work towards supporing multiple page sizes on 64-bit. Convert some assumptions that 64bit uses 3 level page tables into testing PT_NLEVELS. Also some BUG() to BUG_ON() conversions and some cleanups to assembler. Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@parisc-linux.org> Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org>
2006-04-11[PATCH] Configurable NODES_SHIFTYasunori Goto1-0/+5
Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5 NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy. SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's number. This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary. On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2 config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It would be simpler. 2006-02-14[PATCH] hrtimer: round up relative start time on low-res archesIngo Molnar1-0/+5
CONFIG_TIME_LOW_RES is a temporary way for architectures to signal that they simply return xtime in do_gettimeoffset(). In this corner-case we want to round up by resolution when starting a relative timer, to avoid short timeouts. This will go away with the GTOD framework. 2006-01-29[PARISC] Simplify DISCONTIGMEM in KconfigKyle McMartin1-7/+13
parisc was previously displaying both the mm/Kconfig memory model menu, and its own prompt. Remove prompt and have CONFIG_64BIT toggle between DISCONTIGMEM and FLATMEM. Also remove the EXPERIMENTAL from discontigmem support... It's been running fine for months (years?) now. Signed-off-by: Kyle McMartin <kyle@parisc-linux.org>

2005-09-07[PATCH] Kconfig fix (BLK_DEV_FD dependencies)viro@ZenIV.linux.org.uk1-0/+4
Sanitized and fixed floppy dependencies: split the messy dependencies for BLK_DEV_FD by introducing a new symbol (ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC), making BLK_DEV_FD depend on that one and taking declarations of ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC to arch/*/Kconfig. While we are at it, fixed several obvious cases when BLK_DEV_FD should have been excluded (architectures lacking asm/floppy.h are *not* going to have floppy.c compile, let alone work). If you can come up with better name for that ("this architecture might have working PC-compatible floppy disk controller"), you are more than welcome - just s/ARCH_MAY_HAVE_PC_FDC/your_prefered_name/g in the patch below... 2005-07-11[NET]: add a top-level Networking menu to *configSam Ravnborg1-0/+2
Create a new top-level menu named "Networking" thus moving net related options and protocol selection way from the drivers menu and up on the top-level where they belong. To implement this all architectures has to source "net/Kconfig" before drivers/*/Kconfig in their Kconfig file. This change has been implemented for all architectures. Device drivers for ordinary NIC's are still to be found in the Device Drivers section, but Bluetooth, IrDA and ax25 are located with their corresponding menu entries under the new networking menu item. 2005-06-23[PATCH] mm/Kconfig: kill unused ARCH_FLATMEM_DISABLEDave Hansen1-4/+0
This used to be used to disable FLATMEM selection, but I decided to change it to be done generically when DISCONTIG is enabled. The option is unused, so this kills it. 2005-06-23[PATCH] make each arch use mm/KconfigDave Hansen1-1/+7
For all architectures, this just means that you'll see a "Memory Model" choice in your architecture menu. For those that implement DISCONTIGMEM, you may eventually want to make your ARCH_DISCONTIGMEM_ENABLE a "def_bool y" and make your users select DISCONTIGMEM right out of the new choice menu. The only disadvantage might be if you have some specific things that you need in your help option to explain something about DISCONTIGMEM. 2005-05-04[PATCH] ISA DMA Kconfig fixes - part 1Al Viro1-0/+4
A bunch of drivers use ISA DMA helpers or their equivalents for platforms that have ISA with different DMA controller (a lot of ARM boxen). Currently there is no way to put such dependency in Kconfig - CONFIG_ISA is not it (e.g. it is not set on platforms that have no ISA slots, but have on-board devices that pretend to be ISA ones). New symbol added - ISA_DMA_API. Set when we have functional enable_dma()/set_dma_mode()/etc. set of helpers. Next patches in the series will add missing dependencies for drivers that need them. I'm very carefully staying the hell out of the recurring flamefest on what exactly CONFIG_ISA would mean in ideal world - added symbol has a well-defined meaning and for now I really want to treat it as completely independent from the mess around CONFIG_ISA. 2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds1-0/+199
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
